Kanye West debuted his 30 minute short film “Cruel Summer,” starring Kid Cudi, at the Cannes Film Festival. The plot of the story follows a car thief, played by Cudi, “who falls for a blind Arabian princess.” The screenplay was written by Elon Rutberg, the director is the same guy behind the Runaway short film, Alexandre Moors, and the film took place in Qatar. The film plays out much like Runaway‘s video, but this time around featuring new tracks of Kanye’s G.O.O.D Music artists.

Kanye’s idea for the film was to depict a “related to a post-Steve Jobs, post-Windows era, where we’re always on our BlackBerry in a ball game or at the movies. I was very particular about having the screens separate, where your mind puts the screens back together, the way you put memories together.”

The particularity of this film is that it is presented in seven screens inside a pyramid, covering ceiling and floor, the images in these screens come on and off, show different angles of one shot or act as a wide screen, in order to reflect real life. This means that instead of staring straigh ahead, the audience must look at the images around them.

There’s no word yet on when the film will be released.
