Featured Film Movie News News — 05 April 2012

The boring and lazy Hollywood elite is at it again. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, it does.

Seemingly taking a leaf out of Spiderman’s book, Universal has announced a reboot of The Mummy franchise. The films starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz were well-received and hugely popular. Also like Spiderman, the most recent film was torn apart by fans and critics. Even Weisz did not return for the film, with Maria Bello taking her role. Despite a cliffhanger ending and reports of a fourth Mummy film, it seems Universal has decided to scrap the idea altogether and start from the beginning.

Also, in inexplicable Tinseltown nonsense, a sequel to Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull will begin filmingin June.As a fan of both films, I’m naturally biased as hell and extremely skeptical, particularly of Raging Bull II.   The movie plans to chronicle Jake La \Motta’s early years. Obviously, neither Robert De Niro or Martin Scorsese will be involved with production. William Forsythe (who costarred with De Niro in Once Upon a Time in America) will play LaMotta. The film will be helmed by small time writer/director Martin Guigui. The first two Mummy films (I like to pretend the third one doesn’t exist) are so well done and incredibly fun. Rick O’Connell is the role Brendan Fraser will be remembered for as far as I’m concerned. And Raging Bull is a cinematic classic! Arguably, the greatest sports film ever made! Arguably, De Niro’s finest performance! And the fact that this sequel is coming a full 33 years after the first film is incredibly strange to say the least. Personally, I think it’s just a way to cash in on a classic.

What do you all think? Are you excited for either of these films? Or do you, like me, think it’s just thoughtless crap?
