Ron Howard and Chris Hemsworth have teamed up again after their turn in 2013’s underrated Rush, and it looks like it could either be a cinematic spectacle, or something that misses the mark. The first trailer for In the Heart of the Sea has been released, and it looks action-packed, visually lush, and loaded with some impressive talent. Hemsworth stars as the vessel’s veteran first mate, Owen Chase, and the supporting cast includes names such as Ben Whishaw, Cillian Murphy and Brendan Gleeson.
With those names on board it’s hard not to be a little excited. Scheduled to be released in March 2015, the story is based on the 1820 event when a whaling ship was preyed upon by a sperm whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, miles away from home.

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.
