A couple weeks ago, I received a mysterious package containing clues about a new sci-fi TV show, called Extinct. The clues, which you can see in our Instagram post below, were futuristic-like survival items – clearly in line with a show about the extinction of the human race.
Premiering on BYUtv this Sunday, Extinct follows a group of three humans, who were revived by an alien civilization called the Originators. The human race has been extinct for over 400 years, thanks to a more antagonistic alien race called the Karik. It’s only a matter of time when the “reborn” humans discover that there is something more to why they were brought back as they face unexpected dangers, like the Skin Riders, and learn of new secrets that could cause another human extinction.
The three humans we follow this journey with are Ezra, Feena and Abram. All come from different backgrounds and are reborn in the prime of their life with altered genes that make them a little stronger than before. Ezra, played by Chad Michael Collins, is the natural leader of the trio; he was an Army Ranger in his past. Feena (Viktoria Atkin) is battling memories of her past as a hacker turned Resistance fighter, while Abram (Yorke Fryer) learns what it’s like to be young again; in his past life, he was a grandfather and therapist. All three have specific set of skills and insight that make them a good and compelling team, especially one who is supposed to help restore and protect humanity.
On their way to a settlement to do just that, they are faced with new dangers in the form of the Skin Riders, reborn humans infected with evil alien parasites who want to destroy the humanity once and for all. Led by Jax (Matthew Bellows), who carries a heavy resentment against humans, the Skin Riders pose a major threat to the restoration of the human race.
There is a lot at play in this series premiere, and as with most shows, it does rely on exposition quite a bit. However, it’s also necessary for audiences to have a sound understanding of how this world came to be and the kind of journey we should expect in the series’ first season. The pilot showcases an opportunity for many storytelling layers to be peeled back and explored, making for an engaging and thought-provoking sci-fi show. Fans of The CW’s The 100 and Stephenie Meyer’s The Host will likely find themselves intrigued by Extinct’s premise and character dynamics.
