Estimates are in for the weekend of October 17-19, 2014.
#1 – Fury
The Brad Pitt WWII vehicle landed smack dab in the middle of expectations with a $23.5M debut. Is that an okay number? Yes. Does it feel somewhat disappointing considering Dracula Untold dropped to about the same amount last weekend without any star power behind it? Yes. Here’s hoping this film has the audience retention to carry it to a respectable final domestic gross. And I guess we all now know which member of Brangelina is going to bring home the bigger paycheck this year. (Hint – it’s the leggy one.)
#2 – Gone Girl
We get it: this movie’s a hit. The thriller novel adaption had another impressive hold for a $17.8M weekend to bring it to a cumulative total of $107M. All that’s left to say is that it’s surprising the film was unable to gain any awards buzz considering all the hype surrounding it.
#3 – The Book of Life
It’s starting to look like there’s a ceiling to the amount of money children’s films can make around this time of year. The visual stunner brought in $17M on its debut weekend, in the same range as the openings of the last two kiddie flicks released. Maybe it could have done better if last minute marketing didn’t solely focus on Channing Tatum’s voice as the draw for the movie. Advertisers realize kids don’t find that sexy, right…?

#4 – Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
For how many more weekends am I going to have to write that godforsaken title? Despite direct competition from The Book of Life, this film was able to hold quite impressively for a $12M second weekend. With a current total of $36.8M, it looks like this flick is going to hold well through the rest of the month. Meaning the answer to my earlier question is: a few more. *scowls*
#5 – The Best of Me
The most recent Nicholas Sparks adaption was not only the most underwhelming debut of the weekend with $10.2M, it was also the lowest start for an adaption by the romance author ever. I guess movies have to look somewhat appealing in their previews. And that’s not a critique of the film itself. I’m just saying all the previews showed were two generations of a boy and a girl talking. I’m pretty sure I don’t need to pay $10 to see that.
