Carey Mulligan has done a lot of great work in the past years and, to be honest, I’ve often overlooked it because I’ve never been a fan of her screen presence. So, Inside Llewyn Davis and An Education aside, I’ve never really got her appeal. Hopefully this will change after Far From the Madding Crowd.
If the trailer is anything to go by, it looks like another finely crafted film from Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt). From the trailer alone we already are shown the lush artistry gone into the cinematography and if the actors on board (such as Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Michael Sheen) are any indication of the quality, we can rest assured. It’s got romance, it’s a period drama, Schoenaerts deserves recgonition after his performance in Rust and Bone, and it’s got a director with an eye for the aesthetically pleasing.
Check out the official synopsis and trailer below. The film hits limited release this Spring on May 1st, 2015.
Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.
