Well, The Vampire Diaries, it’s been a hell of a ride. Literally and figuratively as the gang hold their final stand-off against the least impressive villain in Diaries history— Cade the devil incarnate.
But that’s not the biggest twist of the episode. We all knew that Cade wasn’t going to win, and somehow I had a feeling that Bonnie was going to be the one to save the day like she always does. So the big twist? The cat’s out of the bag, again literally and figuratively, as super-villain and (to quote Kai, just cause he’s Kai) “the myth, the legend, the baddest bitch of all” newly minted empress of hell Katherine Pierce is back and ready to wreak all sorts of havoc in the final two episodes.
We’ll have to wait until next’s week penultimate episode wedding extravaganza to see Nina Dobrev’s official return to the series, but in the meantime, there’s a lot to discuss about last night’s episode which almost let our heroes be happy, just for a split second.
Starting with Kai’s arch where Chris Woods went absolutely nuts – from horrendous karaoke singing to going full Hannibal to completely losing it Jack Torrence style, Kai was every bit of crazy and downright brilliant this episode. At first I didn’t like the idea of randomly bringing Kai back, but after last night I’m all for the crazy train that is Kai Parker. It’s not even that he’s a good villain (take notes, Cade) he’s a horrible villain, everything he plots and plans goes down the drain, but it’s just so entertaining to watch I just don’t care. The highlight being when he broke out of the Armory’s prison to axe off twins Lizzy and Josie (why? I have no idea), but the fact that he was tricked by Alaric with a cell phone recording of the girls was just such a Kai way to get taken down. Even the fact the Bonnie and the twins created a prison world for Kai with endless Spin Doctors is just too fitting.
Onto the more serious plots of last night’s episode was the Damon moment we’ve all been waiting for. When faced with the impossible choice of choosing his brother or his girl, he chose himself. Finally, in a show that has been so rooted in characters having to choose sides we finally get to see someone break out of the mold. Of course when Damon chooses to spend eternity in hell, I was horrified. Knowing that we are getting a funeral scene by the end of the series, I was almost convinced that we were going to get Damon’s. The big Delena reunion we’ve been waiting two years wasn’t going to happen.
Bonnie saves the day though, by being an untimely distraction so Stefan could stab Cade with the dagger. Cade dies (thank god), and everyone else survives the hellish ordeal.
Stefan comes to a big realization that he’s stupid. I’ve been thinking this the past couple of episodes too, Stefan, I really have.
He proposes to Caroline and of course their wedding is going to be used as a lure to drag Katherine out of the shadows next week. Have none of them learned from Jo and Alaric’s wedding nightmare? Does Game of Thrones even exist in The Vampire Diaries realm? If I don’t hear the term “Red Wedding” next week, I’m going to be very disappointed.
