Eddie learned that there are some people who don’t get to enjoy beer on this week’s Fresh Off the Boat. He happens to be one of those people. Unfortunately, he had to learn about it the hard way.
After realizing that Eddie was not kissing Alison, Louis wanted to reconnect with his son. A nice touch by the show to remind us that he cares for his kid and repeats the idea that kids grow up too fast. To fix this remedy, Louis scheduled a guy’s weekend, which was suppose to be him and Eddie hanging out and bonding, but that changed when Eddie invited his friends. Trent showed up with a beer that he got from his sister, which would in turned out to be Eddie’s downfall.
It was nice to see that Louis wasn’t bothered that Eddie invited his friends. It shows that he’s willing to go with the flow and be a cool dad. It was weird that he didn’t notice they were lying when they were tired, but he is a dad, and things can slip by parents. Thanks to Marvin, Louis was able to realize that something else was going on. Goes to show that Marvin knows a lot of signs of teenage shenanigans.
What was funny about the boys were that they were all excited to drink, but when the time came none of them jumped at the chance to drink first. Eddie stepped up to the plate, but none of them took a sip after. It’s interesting that the beer affected him immediately. He is new to it, but knowing that Asian flush can happen that quick is a new detail.
Speaking of Asian flush, I didn’t know it was a real thing and had to Google it. Turns out it affects a lot of Asians, hence the name. It’s great how the show introduces issues from Asian culture that wouldn’t be apparent to everyone. Asian flush doesn’t sound like fun, and as Louis showed, it seemed like a lot of work in order to drink. It was kind of sad that the only place he could feel himself was around other Asians that suffered from the same thing.
Now Eddie knows that he has it too. It’ll be interesting to see if this affects any of his future decisions or lines of dialogue as the show continues.
Meanwhile, Honey and the boys were dealing with Jessica, who is both a Road Boss, but also a Road Grump. All of this stemming from the fact that the grandma wanted a new seat, and Jessica was more willing to drive to Georgia to get it rather than lose twenty dollars for shipping. What made the decision funny yet interesting was that it shows how much she wanted to save money, but it can also be seen as her affection for her family. She was doing the whole trip to get her mother in law a seat.
What was funny about the trip was that Honey didn’t know that Jessica had the capacity to be a Road Grump. Jessica never acknowledge that she was that way, and the boys neglected to tell her until after she had already made their mother a little upset. Honey managed to solve their traffic jam issue, but it wasn’t enough. They received a ticket, and then they got another one.

What’s good about Honey’s character is that she’s not always afraid to tell Jessica off. She balances out their friendship in many ways. By telling Jessica how she felt, she was able to let her know about her actions, which Jessica took very well. She said she’d be better and removed the license plates to get rid of the problem, which wasn’t a smart move, but she thought it’d work. Until they got pulled over, then the trip was over.
Poor Evan and Emery didn’t get to see that peanut. Also, the grandma didn’t get the chair, which the episode never addressed.
