Our Oscars Predictions!

Can you feel it in the air? It’s Oscar week! And here at TheYoungFolks.com, Gaby and I are super excited! Here are some of our predictions for the awards show on Sunday night:

Best Motion Picture of the Year
Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids are All Right, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Winter’s Bone

Who We Predict Will Win: The King’s Speech
Lucy’s thoughts: TKS will most likely win, but I’d really want the Academy to surprise me and give the award to The Social Network.
Gaby’s thoughts: It’s going to be a split this year. As much as I think The Social Network deserves, I think Academy voters are dead set on King’s Speech.

Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Annette Bening (The Kids are All Right), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine)

Who We Predict Will Win: Natalie Portman
Lucy’s thoughts: No doubt about it.
Gaby’s thoughts: Lots are predicting Benning for an upset, but no one can deny the Natalie practically has it in the bag for this category.

Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Javier Bardem (Biutiful), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), James Franco (127 Hours), Jeff Bridges (True Grit)

Who We Predict Will Win: Colin Firth
Lucy’s thoughts: His performance in TKS stands on a different level from the other nominees.
Gaby’s thoughts: It’s about time that Firth gets some recognition for his talent. He was PHENOMENAL in King’s Speech, and deserves this award so very much.

Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Christian Bale (The Fighter), John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone), Jeremy Renner (The Town), Mark Ruffalo (The Kids are All Right), Geoffrey Rush (The King’s Speech)

Who We Predict Will Win: Christian Bale
Lucy’s thoughts: Hands down Christian Bale will win, but I wouldn’t mind Geoffrey Rush winning!
Gaby’s thoughts: Geoffrey Rush may be the dark horse; but Bale’s performance in The Fighter was jaw-dropping.

Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams (The Fighter), Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech), Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom)

Who We Predict Will Win: Melissa Leo
Lucy’s thoughts: I’d be surprised (and extremely happy) if Hailee Steinfeld won! But its Melissa Leo most deff.
Gaby’s thoughts: Melissa Leo was insane in The Fighter! And as much as I love Hailee Steinfeld; I think we still have to more to see from her.

Who We Predict Will Win: Killing in the Name
Lucy’s thoughts: I have no idea tbh, but apparently “Strangers No More” is a big contender.

Best Short Film (Live Action)
The Confession (Tanel Toom), The Crush (Michael Creagh), God of Love (Luke Matheny), Na Wewe (Ivan Goldschmidt), Wish 143 (Ian Barnes and Samantha Waite)

Gaby’s thoughts: Another category full of highly buzzed nominees. I have no clue! Personally, I guess I’ll pick either Na Wewe or Wish 143.

Achievement in Art Direction
Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Inception, The King’s Speech, True Grit

Who We Predict Will Win: The King’s Speech
Lucy’s thoughts: Love me some HP, but I think that this one’s for either TG or TKS. Or even a surprise with Inception. Who knows.
Gaby’s thoughts: I’m thinking TKS is going to do a bit of a sweep. Plus, after going to one of Hooper’s SAG tour stops, he talked a lot of interesting things about TKS’s art direction.

Achievement in Cinematography
Black Swan (Matthew Libatique), Inception (Wally Pfister), The King’s Speech (Danny Cohen), The Social Network (Jeff Cronenweth), True Grit (Roger Deakins)

Alice in Wonderland (Colleen Atwood), I Am Love (Antonella Cannarozzi), The King’s Speech (Jenny Beaven), The Tempest (Sandy Powell), True Grit (Mary Zophres)

Achievement in Directing
Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), David O. Russell (The Fighter), Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech), David Fincher (The Social Network), Joel and Ethan Coen (True Grit)

Who We Predict Will Win: David Fincher
Lucy’s thoughts: DAVID FINCHER BETTER WIN. THAT IS ALL.
Gaby’s thoughts: This is what I mean when I say there will be a split. There’s a lot of love for Hooper’s movie, but Fincher’s work with The Social Network was truly masterful.

Best Documentary Feature
Exit through the Gift Shop Banksy, director (Paranoid Pictures), Gasland Josh Fox, director (Gasland Productions, LLC), Inside Job Charles Ferguson, director (Representational Pictures), Restrepo Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger, directors (Outpost Films), Waste Land Lucy Walker, director (Almega Projects)

Who We Predict Will Win: Exit Through the Gift Shop
Lucy’s thoughts: Exit Through The Gift Shop is a favorite, but I’d love to see Restrepo win.
Gaby’s thoughts: I think Oscar is going to surprise and pick Exit over the expected Inside Job. I mean, really, it still has us wondering if it’s a hoax.

Achievement in Makeup
Barney’s Version, The Way Back, The Wolfman

Who We Predict Will Win: The Wolfman
Lucy’s thoughts: This one is tough. But I’m going to go with The Wolfman.
Gaby’s thoughts: Oscar voter’s usually confuse the “most” with the “best.”

Achievement in Film Editing
Black Swan (Andrew Weisblum), The Fighter (Pamela Martin),The King’s Speech (Tariq Anwar),127 Hours (Jon Harris), The Social Network (Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall)

Who We Predict Will Win: The Social Network
Lucy’s thoughts: The Social Network. With an impressive script, is only logical that the editing is on the same  level.
Gaby’s thoughts: With Inception not even nominated in this category, TSN is next best thing.

Best Foreign Language Film of the Year
Biutiful (Mexico), Dogtooth (Greece), In a Better World (Denmark), Incendies (Canada), Hors la Loi (Algeria)

Who We Predict Will Win: In A Better World

How to Train Your Dragon (John Powell), Inception (Hans Zimmer), The King’s Speech (Alexandre Desplat), 127 Hours (A.R. Rahman), The Social Network (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross)

Who We Predict Will Win: The Social Network (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross)
Lucy’s thoughts: Hmmm.. I love Alexandre Desplat’s work, but TSN’s score has the power to have me humming it around my house.
Gaby’s thoughts: TSN’s score is instantly recognizable. If it doesn’t win, then the Academy is losing their hearing.

Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song)
“Coming Home” from Country Strong Music and Lyric by Tom Douglas, Troy Verges and Hillary Lindsey
“I See the Light” from Tangled Music and Lyric by Alan Menken Lyric by Glenn Slater

Gaby’s thoughts: Personally, I love “If I Rise” and I can’t wait to hear Florence Welch sing it at the ceremony. But I think Toy Story 3 has this one.

Achievement in Sound Editing
Inception, Toy Story 3, TRON: Legacy, True Grit, Unstoppable

Who We Predict Will Win: Inception

Gaby’s thoughts: Inception seems like the best choice for this category.

Achievement in Sound Mixing
Inception, The King’s Speech, Salt, The Social Network, True Grit

Who We Predict Will Win: Inception
Lucy’s thoughts: Once again, Inception.
Gaby’s thoughts: It seemed like quite a task to mix sound in Inception.

Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Hereafter, Inception, Iron Man 2

Who We Predict Will Win: Inception
Lucy’s thoughts: …you know it. Inception. This movie should’ve gotten too Best Direction and Leo DiCaprio for Best Actor nom!
Gaby’s thoughts: Inception was insane visually!

Who We Predict Will Win: Aaron Sorkin – The Social Network
Lucy’s thoughts: MR AARON SORKIN, THIS IS YOUR AWARD. MESMERIZING SCRIPT MY FRIEND.

Lucy’s thoughts: The King takes it again!
Gaby’s thoughts: One of the best things about King’s Speech is the script, and it’ll be cool to see the 76 year old accept the award.

Alright, young folks, that was tough. Who do you think will win?
