Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse TV Show Has A Cast!

Chances are that if you’re a bookish person and were on the internet today, you’re aware of the brilliant casting news that was announced about Netflix’s upcoming TV series ‘Shadow and Bone,’ based on the Grishaverse series of young adult novel by Leigh Bardugo. For those of of you not aware of for those of you, like me, hunt for any and all information related to adaptation details of your favorite book, read on.

Earlier today, Leigh announced on twitter the casting of several key characters in the ‘Shadow and Bone’ series. They are:

Jessi Mei Lei as Alina Starkov, who readers first met in Shadow and Bone, the first novel that set up the Grishaverse.

Ben Barnes as General Kirigan, AKA, the Darkling, the anti-hero at the heart of Shadow and Bone and a divisive figure in the YA community, to put it mildly.

Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker, one of the protagonists of Six of Crows, a companion series to Shadow and Bone.

Archie Renaux as Malyen Oretsev, Alina’s best friend from Shadow and Bone.

Amita Suman as Inej, one of the Dregs, Kaz Brekker’s gang in Six of Crows.

Kit Young as Jesper Fahey, another member of the Dregs in Six of Crows.

Aside from Ben Barnes, who is best known for his work on “Westworld” and in The Chronicles of Narnia movies, as Prince Caspian, these actors are virtually unknown and offer a delightful opportunity to unveil the best of the ‘Shadow and Bones’ series characters. My excitement stems mostly from the timeline shift that having these characters in one series would present. Are we going to get flashbacks and flash-forwards? Are we going to get all the characters working together toward one goal or are we going to be treated to a This Is Us type model where we get to see the choices that one group (the Shadow and Bone set) might make to affect another group (the Six of Crows set)? The possibilities are endless and honestly, so exciting. For an industry where book adaptation development sits in limbo for what seems like too long, this casting news has definitely created a buzz for fans of the Grishaverse. I can’t wait to see my favorite characters in real life and I can’t wait for more news on the series to be announced–hopefully soon now that we have casting down!
