While walking to the train earlier today, out of the corner of my eye I saw a falling flag move with the blowing wind. For a split second, it looked like a UFO, and I was terrified. Thanks to The 5th Wave, my paranoia has, like, no bounds. Its realistic storytelling and characters will sit with you for days after reading Rick Yancey’s YA thriller. And despite my fears, I’m still very excited for the next book in The 5th Wave series, The Infinite Sea.
USA Today revealed the cover for The Infinite Sea, as well as an interview where Yancey talks about what to expect in the sequel and the status of The 5th Wave movie adaptation. First, let’s take a nice look at the cover…
I love this cover. Sure, I don’t know exactly what will go down in The Infinite Sea, but the cover sets the right tone for what I know of the world that Yancey has described so far. Of course, the author agrees and elaborates a little on the cover:
I love this cover because it takes themes or motifs from the first book that will carry through on this one and the third one, too. They have the negative image of the owl on the first book, and there is a negative image of an owl on the second cover — instead of being behind that solitary figure, it’s actually in front of them and reflected in that watery surface.
The first cover was in the woods and you see a sea in the distance. In this one, it’s more of an interior, where it’s almost like a tunnel, which is a little bit of a teaser of the second book.
Yancey also talked about the status of the movie adaptation of The 5th Wave, which currently has “a blinking green light.” It’s no surprise, since this book is practically tailored for cinema in my opinion. But with the recent fare of YA adaptations being less than satisfactory, I don’t have too much faith in Hollywood doing this book justice. Regardless, it looks like The 5th Wave is headed to production with a director (J Blakeson, The Disappearance of Alice Creed), a screenwriter (Susannah Grant, Erin Brockovich, Ever After), and a soon-to-be-announced cast. Who that cast will be is a mystery and will definitely be interesting to find out.
Until then, we have the books to look forward to, and it seems like The 5th Wave has us only at the beginning. In case you haven’t heard of this insanely awesome sci-fi thriller, here’s the official description of the first book:

You can read more of what to expect in The Infinite Sea at USA Today; apparently we’ll be “shocked” by Evan’s fate. I can’t EVEN begin to figure out what that could mean. Thanks for the extra emotional distress, Rick Yancey.
