If you haven’t heard, it was announced late last year that Netflix will adapt the bestselling book series A Series of Unfortunate Events into an original show. The series follows the misadventures of the three Baudelaire orphans: Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. After the unexpected death of their parents in a mysterious fire, the children are forced to live with their cruel, yet eccentric, uncle/cousin who will stop at nothing to obtain their inheritance. Paramount Television, the TV branch of Paramount, will produce the show along with the author of the series, Lemony Snicket, whose real name is Daniel Handler. Paramount also produced the 2004 feature film starring Emily Browning, Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep, and Jude Law. Handler is currently working closely with Netflix to find a director for the series.
I was a huge fan of the series when I was younger (and still am), and the movie is one of my favorite book-to-film adaptations ever. I can take books being turned into movies, but adapting a beloved book series into a television show has never sat well with me. For example, I started reading The Vampire Diaries a few years before there was any talk of it being turned into a television series. I loved the books, but when it came to seeing it on screen I didn’t really enjoy the changes the writers made to the basic storyline and how everything was sexed up. Anyway, when I heard about Netflix acquiring the rights to A Series of Unfortunate Events I literally squealed with joy and told everybody I knew (well, at least the ones who read it). Given the success of the original shows streaming now, I trust that Netflix will give us something just as spectacular as the film version or better.
