‘Percy Jackson’ 10th Anniversary: Which Fairly GOD Parent Would You Choose?

Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. (Don’t you feel old too?) We are very excited to be one of the Percy Pack websites to celebrate Percy Jackson’s anniversary for the next few months. We have many posts (and GIVEAWAYS!) planned out, but first, let’s introduce you to the mythical and awesome world of Percy Jackson.

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse–Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends–one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena–Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

At Camp Half Blood, all of the demigods are housed by their God parent, ultimately bunking with their half-siblings. Each Olympian God has different powers and personalities. TYF writer Lauren Wengrovitz introduces most of the Olympian Gods in the Percy Jackson series below. VOTE for which Olympian God is your favorite!

Zeus

Zeus is the King of the Olympian Gods. He is a member of the “Big Three,” who took a vow not to have children with humans. Despite that vow, Zeus’ daughter, Thalia Grace, is the reason that the protective barrier exists around Camp Half-Blood. Children of Zeus have the ability to control the air, weather, lighting, and electricity.

Poseidon

Poseidon is the god of the sea. Also a member of the “Big Three,” he too broke the oath not to have children; his son is the Percy Jackson. Poseidon and his children have the ability to breathe underwater and can control water and the ocean.

Hades

Known as the god of the underworld, Hades is the third member of the “Big Three.” He also broke the oath, resulting in siblings Bianca and Nico. His children have the power to control ghosts/spirits.

Ares

Child of Zeus and Hera, Ares is the god of war. As a result, his children are skilled in all things battle-related. His daughter Clarisse appears in multiple Percy Jackson books.

Athena

Athena is the goddess of wisdom. Her children are skilled in battle, strategy, wisdom (of course), and even crafts (remember her weaving battle with Arachne?). Her daughter Annabeth Chase plays a huge role throughout the entire series.

Hermes

Hermes is the messenger god. As messenger, Hermes is the only god able to safely travel in and out of the underworld. His son, Luke Castellan, plays a vital role throughout the entire series.
