‘Truly Madly Famously’ Q&A with Author Rebecca Serle

Today, the sequel to Rebecca Serle’s starry, romantic young adult novel, Famous in Love, is released! Truly, Madly, Famously continues the story with Paige dealing with her new Hollywood “It” Girl status, while trying to navigate love life with her co-stars, both on and off screen–and in the public eye. It’s not easy for Paige whose life is literally imitating art as she fights to understand her feelings for Rainer and Jordan, all the while, trying to learn more about herself and her new life.

To celebrate Truly Madly Famously’s book birthday, we had a quick Q&A with the author who shares what inspired her to write this story and an update on the upcoming TV adaptation starring Bella Thorne.

What inspired you to write this story?

When I 12 I was obsessed with a show called Dawson’s Creek. I remember finding out that my favorite couple on the show was also dating in real life— and I wondered what that was like. I’ve always been curious about fame— how exciting and daunting it is.

Did you have to do a lot of research on Hollywood and the film-making process?

I went to USC (University of Southern California) and have spent a lot of time in LA over the years– which certainly helped. But the ins and outs of filmmaking were new to me. I have a few friends who work in film who were very helpful. I read some behind the scenes books, and sort of combined that information into what you see on the page. Some of it is my own imagination, too!

With this next part of the story, it’s really focused on Paige’s romantic life and her new rising career. Is it hard balancing that out while writing? Is one easier to write than the other?

I absolutely loved writing Paige navigating her own success. In Famous in Love she’s really trying to find her footing– is she any good? She’s sort of trying to figure out how to be August, her character. How to give that the weight it deserves. In Truly Madly she’s got August down— now, she’s figuring out how to be Paige. What’s her new normal? In many ways the romance serves as a filter for that, not the other way around. She’s figuring out who she is, and each guy is helping her in different ways.

If you were Paige, would you pick Rainer or Jordan? Why?

I can’t answer that! But I will say the story tends to go the way I want it to….so take that for what you will :)

I heard Famous in Love is in development as a TV show. Are you involved in the production? Can you give us an update on the show?

Yes! Marlene King, creator of Pretty Little Liars, and I co-created the TV show together. I’m currently living in LA starting work on it. Bella Thorne is playing Paige Townsen, and it’s all very exciting! Check my twitter @RebeccaASerle for updates– as soon as we have more info, I will let you guys know!
