Seize the Tuesday: Giving Music Away on Valentine’s Day

When I moved to Monterey, CA, those impulses did not go away. I’d been in town for less than a month, and for the first couple of weeks before I made friends, music kept me company. The All Songs Considered podcast in particular. After listening to their Valentine’s Day special, I got an idea.

On Valentine’s Day I drove to an outdoor mall with a friend, a poster, and four different stacks of burned CDs. Each stack represented a different playlist I’d created to match the possible moods people might be feeling during the holiday. Lovin’ love for the happy; Dumped! for those seething from a break up; Brooding Romance for those who felt like wallowing in longing; And Sexy Time needs no explanation.
We set up shop by a fountain, held up the poster which announced our purpose, and waited for people to look in our direction. It was a weird thing to do, but I loved every minute of it. Trying to guess which playlist people would go for, or which would run out first (Dumped!). Imagining people falling in love with the music I chose for them. The looks I got, appreciative or confused.
The stacks of CDs were not so big, since I was a recent college grad and an unpublished writer who hadn’t even really written anything yet. So the whole thing took about twenty minutes or so, but it’s stayed with me for years. Partially because it was simply fun, but mostly because it was an impulse indulged in, a day seized.
