Most Anticipated of 2015

While it’s been fun looking back on the last year, it’s way more exciting to look forward. 2015 has a ton of AMAZING things in store for us. We decided to highlight which movies, books, games, TV shows, etc. that we are most excited to see, read, and experience.

  1.  The New Legend of Zelda (Wii U)

Honestly, how can you not love The Legend of Zelda? If you’re a child of the ’80s who loves the 8-bit original, or from the ’90s when Ocarina of Time seemed god-tier untouchable, The Legend of Zelda provides a vast world of imagination to explore, and the newest title for the Wii U will be the first true 3D Zelda with an open world since 2006’s Twilight Princess, and the first since then to also reunite players with companion steed Epona. Needless to say, I’m ecstatically waiting to explore Hyrule and collect Triforce pieces all over again. What can I say? Zelda is my religion.

  1.  Avengers: Age of Ultron (Film)

Oh, Marvel fans are in for a treat. This fall, we witnessed the glorious trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the conclusion of Marvel’s Phase 2 couldn’t look more amazingly brutal. We’ll get Hydra, we’ll get the Maximoff twins, some more Avengers internal conflict, the setting up of Civil War and even better will be James Spader as Ultron 5, the living automaton. Cue Evan squeaking like a small child from excitement. This is going to be epic.

  1. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4, PS3, X360, XOne, PC)

Hideo Kojima is a madman. A sequel to Peace Walker, and the first console released Metal Gear Solid game since 2008, will conclude the saga of Big Boss and his turn to villainy, and the Phantom Pain features the darkest tone yet, and the heaviest commentary on Private Military Contractors in the series, as well as returning characters like Revolver Ocelot and McDonald Miller, and actor Kiefer Sutherland to perform a new voice for Snake. Plus, if the preview release last spring, “Ground Zeroes,” was any indication, the game’s new Fox Engine will be groundbreaking. This game has had me screaming “Metal Gear?!” since its announcement, and my voice is getting tired by now. I absolutely cannot wait.

  1.  Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Film)

Fans waited years for more Star Wars, and settled for a decade of disappointment, but now J.J. Abrams is taking us back to the far far away galaxy we all remember so fondly… the teaser has been released, and confirms the original trilogy’s used and gritty space-junk look, the return of X-wings, the Millennium Falcon, and original cast stars Luke, Han, Leia, 3PO, Chewie and R2, along with some fresh and talented faces including John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong’o.

  1.  Spectre / Bond 24 (Film)

Bond 24’s title was confirmed this December, and the hype meter for SPECTRE is probably the most exponentially raised in all of 2014. Daniel Craig returns for his fourth Bond film, and second time in the series for director Sam Mendes, complete with the crew from Skyfall and a new Aston-Martin, plus new villains played by Dave Bautista, Andrew Scott and Christoph Waltz.

  1.  Jurassic World (Film)

We were recently given a trailer inviting us back to Isla Nublar and between being Spielberg fans and ’90s kids, and we couldn’t be more pumped. Jurassic World is open for business, and features new attractions the series has never seen before, like aquatic dwelling beasts, and a plot-twisting hybrid dinosaur, courtesy of InGen. The film stars Chris Pratt, New Girl’s Jake Johnson, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

  1. Tech Innovation

There weren’t a lot of massive releases in 2014 other than a slightly bigger iPhone and hints at a watch. Perhaps the innovations presented in TED Talks have spoiled me, but I noticed that 2014 saw little drastic steps in innovation, save for NASA landing on a moving comet, but that was undermined by a guy’s shirt. I hope that tech is different in 2015. I hope to see progress made on making internet widely available, the spread of Google Fiber, and Apple giving us something fresh besides a silly watch peripheral.

  1. Marvel’s Netflix Series (TV)

It’s time for a new representation of Daredevil. It’s time for a solo black hero to shine in Luke Cage, and a female with Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones. It’s time for Marvel to take their Cinematic Universe to the gritty lower streets of New York City as their Defenders Netflix series is being filmed for 2015 release.

  1.  No Man’s Sky (Game)

This is the game that has taken everyone by surprise upon its announcement, and every subsequent trailer. Next year, Hello Games will offer the prospect of a populated galaxy of explorable planets, completely available to roam free within and between in what is being called a “procedurally generated open universe.” For gamers, the idea almost seems too good to be true, especially combined with a stunning, minimalist modern art look and a beautiful color pallet shared between its planets. We’ll have to wait until next summer to see if No Man’s Sky lives up to the hype, but oh, what hype it is.

  1. Mighty Number 9 (Game)

One of the creators of the classic Capcom Megaman series, Keiji Inafune, made a Kickstarter last year to develop his new game, Mighty Number 9, which is essentially a spiritual successor to the classic Megaman games. Fans banded together to fund the game in a sum worth 4 million dollars, and now Mighty Number 9 will see a wide multiplatform release next spring, and I couldn’t be more excited to play it.

  1. Daft Punk’s New Album? (Music)

We got lucky, and now it’s time to give life back to the music, and for Daft Punk to deliver more fragments of time with their consistently incredible digital love. Whatever they have in mind for a new album next year, I’m sure they’re doin’ it right.

In no specific order…

– Mockingjay – Part 2 – Because something might actually happen in this one.

– Frank Ocean’s Sophomore Album? – Which isn’t even announced it’s coming, but I’m still patiently waiting. Hopefully 2015 is the year.

– Magic Mike XXL – Because of reasons.

– My Mad Fat Diary Season 3 – IT’S HAPPENING Y’ALL!!!

– Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Never been this excited for a Star Wars movie, but to be fair, I’m excited to see the new cast in it.

– Furious 7 – Can’t believe this is the last time we’ll see Brian O’Conner :(

– Jurassic World – Chris Pratt. Chris Pratt.

– Parks and Recreation – Final season, and all the tears from here to Pawnee, Indiana.

– Better Call Saul – Because I love Breaking Bad and can’t wait to see Saul before he met Jesse and Walter White.

I feel like I’m missing a ton of good films and television shows and whatnot that are going to be coming out in the upcoming year, but for the immediate purposes of this list, these are the films that came to mind. If anything this shows that 2015 is going to be a HUGE year for blockbusters and science fiction.

  1.     Avengers: Age of Ultron

This one is kind of a no-brainer. I adored the first one, have coveted each bit of information that’s come from each Marvel movie since, and the first time I watched the trailer I flipped out. The trailer was fantastic and alluding to some of the darker days ahead without making it appear like a bleak snooze fest, giving each of our characters (including new ones) ample time and using a classic Disney tune to much avail. Also, if you haven’t checked out the trailer set to Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” you must. I’m going to be in the theater for this film opening night and bouncing up and down in joy because above all else, these films bring out the childhood wonder in me.

  1.     Ex Machina

This trailer kicked my ass in just how stylistically cool it was. Also from here on out Oscar Isaac has a dedicated fan that will see any film he stars in. It’s a done deal.

  1.     Crimson Peak  

Jessica Chastain? Tom Hiddleston? Guillermo Del Torro? Gothic horror!? Yeah, count me in.

4.       Mission Impossible 5

I got into this series embarrassingly late to the game and I’m simply excited to see one on the big screen. The same people from Ghost Protocol being on board certainly helps in my excitement.

  1.     Spectre

I really am just a sucker for good action drama and actors such as Ben Whishaw and Andrew Scott make it more interesting.

  1.     Victor Frankenstein

James McAvoy in my opinion is easily one of the most watchable actors out there. He’s got a devilish charm about him that makes him playing Doctor Frankenstein all the more appealing.

  1.     Trainwreck

Amy Schumer deserves a film that launches her brand of comedy and, while I don’t always like him, Judd Apatow is as good of a launching pad as most. And the extended supporting cast is simply incredible.

  1.     Tomorrowland

This was a scenario where the film hadn’t even been on my radar until the teaser trailer was released and my attention was caught. I don’t know the entire premise, but I know Brad Bird is behind it, I know the visuals look lively and fun, and that it doesn’t resemble what I’ve seen before.

  1.     Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I haven’t quite forgiven J.J. Abrams yet for how he butchered Star Trek Into Darkness, but I will readily admit that my excitement was beyond what I’d imagined when the trailer hit. Mixing some wonderful nostalgia and new characters, the trailer easily attracted both old fans and new.

  1.     Daredevil  

It’s Marvel and its Charlie Cox and it’s a character that deserves better than Ben Affleck.

  1. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

If you thought this wasn’t going to be first, you’re kidding yourself.

  1. Spectre

If you thought this wasn’t going to be first, you were right. I mean, Star Wars tops James Bond… (let’s forget the ’90s.)

  1. Avengers: Age of Ultron

Are you seeing a pattern here? I sure am… lazy Hollywood making sequels and spin-offs. Who do they think they are? Pleasing us like we’re supposed to anticipate the… wait

  1. Fifty Shades of Grey

Not that I read the book (but a cool teacher of mine did), but it’s not like you’re supposed to forget all the hubbub it caused in the first place.

  1. Mortdecai

This just screams Johnny Depp in costume just as much as it did in Ed Wood – meaning pretty little. But, the premise of an art piece stolen by the Nazis and searched for just sounds like it would have been made already.

  1. Tomorrowland

Wow, this sounds new and original. Literally, in the non-sarcastic way, it actually is new and original.

  1. Goosebumps

It’s like Cabin in the Woods meets Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Only this time, it’s actually all of your childhood nightmares, plus the excitement you get from realizing there is a Goosebumps corny movie to go along with the book you read.

  1. Macbeth

Because you can take all of the other classic English literature movies (shall we forget that weird CGI Angelina Jolie in Beowulf?) and put them aside since it’s everyone’s favorite Shakespeare play (nope, I don’t care if you think Richard III is better, because even Kevin Spacey doesn’t make me love Macbeth any less). And it has Michael Fassbender.

  1. Regression

It’s like backwards Memento. But instead of trying to find someone to kill, it’s someone trying to pretend he didn’t. (Return to note 3 for thoughts on this writing.)

  1.  Untitled Cold War Spy Thriller

The bad news – it has no name. The good news – this lack of a name just adds to the movie’s plot. I mean, I saw them filming around my town the other day (that’s a lie, it was a month ago), and they had the timepiece cars and everything. Plus it’s Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg making a Cold War movie with the CIA. What more can a girl ask for?

    I’ve been a fan of Meg Cabot’s Princess Diaries series for almost fifteen years now—I can’t wait to read the first adult installment.
  2. Glitterbug – The Wombats
    It’s been three years since the Wombats’ This Modern Glitch; we’re long overdue for some new tunes from the Liverpool trio.
  3. Jurassic World
    Dinosaurs and Chris Pratt.
  4. “Please Remain Calm” and All the Rage by Courtney Summers
    If you haven’t read anything by Courtney Summers yet, fix that now.
  5. Scream television show
    I’m concerned that it’s going to be a total bastardization of my favorite horror movie franchise, but I’m still super excited to see it.
  6. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
    Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass is one of my favorite YA series. I’m excited to read her Beauty and the Beast retelling next year.
  7. The Ruby Circle (Bloodlines, Book 6) by Richelle Mead
    As much as I wish it would never end, I must know what happens in the conclusion of the Bloodlines series.
  8. I Crawl Through It by A.S. King
    A new A.S. King book is always something to look forward to.
  9. American Beauty/American Psycho by Fall Out Boy
    Herein lies my unapologetic love of Fall Out Boy.
  10. Mockingjay – Part 2
    Yeesh, this one is going to be a tough movie to watch.
