A ‘Resident Evil 2’ Remake Is in Development

The rumors are true: horror is making its way back to Raccoon City! Capcom revealed in an online YouTube video that the iconic 1998 survival horror video game Resident Evil 2 is being remade for the latest generation of gaming platforms.

Following in the footsteps from the success of Resident Evil HD Remaster and the earlier Resident Evil Remake, the second entry in the popular video game series looks to be remade for upcoming release as well. For the last few weeks, rumors were buzzing around the gaming community that a potential remake of Resident Evil 2 was coming, but nothing was confirmed. Thanks to ongoing support and interest from fans, a development project has been approved by Capcom.

Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the good news on Wednesday with an announcement video on the official Resident Evil YouTube page.

“You’ve been telling us for years that you want Resident Evil 2 to be remade, and we haven’t been able to make it happen…until now!” said Hirabayashi in the official announcement.

For those unfamiliar with the survival horror video game, Resident Evil 2 follows the adventures of Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield as they try to escape the zombie-infested streets of the fictional town of Raccoon City. Other popular characters featured in the game include Umbrella scientist William Birkin, his missing daughter Sherry Birkin, and the mysterious Ada Wong. Resident Evil 2 was released in 1998 on the PlayStation One to great success, sales, and fan love.

No additional details have been revealed yet about the release date or which gaming platforms will carry the new Resident Evil game. However, it can be guessed that Resident Evil 2 Remake could find a home on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and/or PC.

In the announcement, Hirabayashi does mention that details surrounding the remake will not be revealed for a while. Capcom and the Resident Evil team are currently working on the upcoming Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster. Classified as a “remake” instead of a “remaster” title, Resident Evil 2 Remake could be what fans have hoped for after all this time, with new content, maps, and extras created for the game, similar to the treatment done for Resident Evil Remake.
