E3 2013 Microsoft: Metal Gear, Halo, Forza 5, Witcher 3

E3LogoIt’s time for the Electronic Entertainment Expo of 2013, the week where all the big companies show us the massive arsenal of games to be released within the next year or so, and Microsoft threw a lot on our plate to be looking forward to around Thanksgiving time. (that wasn’t a food joke, I swear)

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Konami’s flagship franchise returns in this beautiful open world game with stunning detail, and a new type of redefined Tactical Espionage Action: one that involves horseback riding. It was also revealed the other day that Big Boss will be played by Kiefer Sutherland (24’s Jack Bauer), making him the first person to provide voice acting for any iteration of Snake that is not David Hayter, who seems to be playing Punished Snake in Phantom Pain.

The next chapter in the Forerunner Saga, this trailer was Master Chief’s debut in Xbox One graphical glory, and it wasn’t even obvious it was a Halo game until about a minute into the teaser trailer. You tricky dogs, 343. Tricky indeed. With a new Windows strategy game in development, this, and the Spielberg produced Television series, there should be no complaints from Halo fans over the next couple of years, as this series can provide endless content.

Forza Motorsport 5

This was the game of the day that provided the most impressive moments in showing us exactly what the technology in the Xbox One can do. Claiming to be the beginning of a new era, the game shows real world clarity, and takes a focus on the small details in texture and lighting, as oposed to taking focus in things like polygon count. Yes, game graphics have reached that point. Not only that, but Forza is planning to declare the end of AI as a concept with a new feature they call the Driveatar (yes, the name is awful). In game opponents do not drive like AI, but like people, fetching data using adaptable computer intelligence to mimic the kind of ways you, your family and your friends play the game, and ghost drive against others through the cloud network. We will now be building our own opponents, which is an impressive and terrifying concept.

The Witcher 3 promises huge amounts of tactual combat, a story that is epic, mature and completely open ended in a vast world, with over 100 hours of gameplay. The game will also allow optional (It’s actually optional!) voice commands in combat, and will be reworked to have an experience that will feel native for next gen platform unique from the PC version.

Killer Instinct

The surprise reveal of the day, somehow, ended up being a revamp of the classic 90’s fighting game, Killer Instinct. Microsoft’s Double Helix studio is working on this edition of a classic to many gamers, and will be an exclusive to the Xbox One console.

Keep in mind, this is only a small assortment of the big franchises announced today. More details from E3 2013 will arrive soon!
