The Last Jedi’s First Trailer Reunites Us With Our Favorite Characters

Well, everyone, it’s finally here. At Star Wars Celebration, fans eagerly awaited the first look at Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. The panel featured Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Kathleen Kennedy, Director Rian Johnson, newcomer Kelly Marie Tran, and the iconic Mark Hamill. Moderated by Josh Gad, the panel shared laughs and memories about 2015’s The Force Awakens and discussed what could be in store for our favorite characters.

They first revealed unveiled the poster for The Last Jedi which had a very retro feel to it. However, the grand finale was what we’ve all been waiting for: the first teaser trailer.

Even though it’s pretty obvious where the story is headed, LucasFilm did a good job of not giving away any plot detail. We get to see the scope of this world and the beautiful wide shots that Johnson utilizes. It reminded me of how talented Johnson. The focus is mainly on Rey, who is trying to train. We see her struggling to control this power inside her and failing to grasp what the force really is (which should be good enough for people who called her a Mary Sue). We also get a shot of Finn still unconscious, Poe running towards his fighter, and a great shot of Kylo Ren showing off a bit of his scar.

The biggest takeaway from this trailer is the voice over. We finally hear Luke Skywalker speaking for the first time in 30 years. His voice seems to be guiding us through Rey’s thought process, asking her what she sees and teaching her about the force. The teaser ends with him saying, “It’s time for the Jedi to end.” Could this be a devastating foreshadow?

There’s so much to unpack in this short teaser, and I’m sure that Star Wars fans are already concocting their theories. There seems to be as much energy in this film as its predecessor with some big developments in store.

The Last Jedi was blast off on December 15th.
