What next for Ghostbusters?

Last year’s all-female revamp of Ghostbusters was one of the more divisive movies of recent times. Despite some favourable reviews and moderately respectable box office revenues of $229 million, there have been questions over whether the 2016 film marked the end of the supernatural franchise.

But it seems that there are a few more ghosts in the Hollywood machine, as the franchise caretaker, Ivan Reitman, has suggested plans for more Ghostbusters movies and even some interesting games.

The producer, who’s also behind the forthcoming Baywatch revamp, is looking to supply movie fans with plenty more live action Ghostbusters films, as well as possibly expanding the Ghostbusters universe with some animated spin-offs.

So far it’s unclear whether these spin-offs will take the approach that made the The Real Ghostbusters animated TV show such a hit, but it seems as though Ghostbusters: Ecto Force could be hitting our television screens as early as next year.

There are also plans for an animated movie to be created alongside the TV series, and whilst the original movie is now over 30 years old, it’s also making moves to become part of the hugely profitable video gaming realm.

We’ve already seen Activision’s Ghostbusters: Slime City game being released on our mobiles last year. And there are future projects that include a planned Ghostbusters mobile slots game at the LadyLucks casino gaming site, as well as the franchise’s first virtual reality release.

PlayStation 4 fans were given a treat earlier this year when Ghostbusters VR: Now Hiring gave gamers a chance to explore the Ghostbusters’ headquarters and even meet up with Slimer.

And whilst seeing the Ghostbusters franchise taking its first steps in the virtual domain is great news, it’s still uncertain as to when we can expect another Ghostbusters movie.

Already it seems as through the Russo Brothers’ Ghostbusters all-male movie has been axed, and despite the all-female Ghostbusters movie being a pretty good film, it seems as though it’s unlikely that Sony will be willing to take another gamble on such a divisive movie.

But with one of the original actors and creators, Dan Aykroyd, giving the recent Ghostbusters movie nothing but praise, it’s hoped that we’ll see plenty more from this enjoyable supernatural franchise. And whether that’s as an animated TV show, a mobile slots game, or an immersive VR experience, it looks like we haven’t seen the last of those Ghostbusters just yet.
