Well in Cloud Atlas, it’s just like that, except that the actors are portraying their younger and future selves in different character forms. (That makes sense if you wait for me to tell you what the film’s about). According to the film’s official page, “Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.”
Coming out October 26th, the movie kinda sounds like The Planet of the Apes. (*Note, I mean the original Planet of the Apes). In the original Planet of the Apes, astronauts get lost in a time continuum where (since they left earth in 1967, give or take a few years) they reach a distant planet in the future. Not trying to give away the ending, what the humans do in the past causes the apes to attack the humans and stir a revolution.
The movie is 164 minutes long (a whopping 2 hours and 44 minutes) and stars Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, Susan Sarandon and Keith David- all presuming to have 6 roles (… well, we’re sure about Hanks and Weaving). Many people are very excited that the Wachowski siblings (The Matrix) are making another movie, after their latest hit, 2008’s Speedracer. In an interview, Hugo Weaving stated that, “It’s a project that’s really exciting because all of the actors will be playing more than one role. I actually have six characters in the same film and they are all different people in six different stories.”
By piecing together the trailer, E!online attempted to determine the order of events, namely how all six stories are intertwined together. The story will begin with a man voyaging over rough seas to uncharted lands who write a journal, which ends up years later in the 1930s in a wealthy composer’s house. The assistant for the composer becomes immersed into the story. The movie somehow jumps over to Halle Berry who is a reporter in the 70s trying to uncover the dirty tactics of Hugh Grant and his nuclear power plant. Then a publisher who owes some money gets stuck in trouble when he can’t repay his debt. The movie takes another jump to future Korea where everything looks peaceful and calm until you realize there is suppressive government behind everyone. Here, E!online states that it will make a loop to where Hanks and Berry are to create a civilization after a apocalypse.
Susan Sarandon even said in an interview that she can’t wait to see it and that the Wachowski siblings and Tom Twyker (Run Lola Run), “wanted to make and epic adult film that’s about epic adult ideas. So I pray for them that there are enough ideas and adults to go around, because it’s a fabulous experiment in American filmmaking. . . . I play a lot of little parts, nothing like what Halle and Tom are doing throughout the film. I play an Indian man. I hope I don’t get in trouble for that.”
