‘Wonder’ Trailer: First look at Julia Roberts & Jacob Tremblay in new movie

When I read Wonder a few years ago, I was immediately touched by sincerity of R.J. Palacio’s novel .Centered on a young boy with significant facial differences, Wonder tells the story of August’s first time attending public school and the joys and fears he and his family face as Auggie ventures out into the world.

Directed by Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), the trailer, which stars Room’s Jacob Tremblay along with Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson as his parents, plays like the typical emotional family tear-jerker. What felt interesting and authentic in the book seems a little hollow in this trailer. However, this is just a trailer playing up the aspects that Hollywood thinks appeals to a wider audience. Whether the film dives deeper in what life is like for a disabled kid and throws away convention for something real remains to be seen. For now, the apparent charm of Tremblay and the rest of the cast is its most appealing quality.

Wonder arrives in theaters November 17, 2017.
