The science fiction genre these days is littered with remakes, reboots, sequels and genre hybrids, and so rarely does something that feels fresh come to the forefront. Not to say that the sci-fi genre has been failing, necessarily, but it feels like films such as Arrival, Children of Men, Snowpiercer and Ex Machina are fewer and farther inbetween. All of this to say that when news broke that Steven Spielberg, a master of science fiction and action adventure, was returning to his roots with the adaptation of the popular book Ready Player One, we could hardly contain our excitement.
Our first sneak peek is here coming from the San Diego Comic Con and it’s about as wonderful as we expected, full of nerd references and big, bombastic set pieces. Hopefully this won’t go the way of Ender’s Game and with Spielberg at the helm, it seems silly to even think that way. Sure, he’s floundered a touch with the DOA The BFG and I can’t say I was immensely taken with Lincoln, but it’s this genre where his vision truly shines. Starring Tye Sheridan, Simon Pegg, TJ Miller and Olivia Cooke, the cast will have the challenge of living up to the source material and filmmaker.
