2017 BAFTA Awards: Three Billboards wins big

The winners of the 2017 BAFTA Awards, presented in 2018, were announced on Sunday during a ceremony hosted by Joanna Lumley at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

With a little overlap among voters for both the BAFTA Awards and Oscars, there’s no guarantee that the winners will repeat on Oscar Sunday in a few weeks.  At the same time, it’s almost guaranteed that Frances McDormand, Gary Oldman, Sam Rockwell, Allison Janney, and Guillermo Del Toro will be giving speeches when the big day comes in Hollywood.  Heading into voting, The Florida Project’s Willem Dafoe was arguably the frontrunner but he’s all but been ignored during awards season.

Another question heading into Oscar Sunday and following his win at the ASC Awards on Saturday night, will this finally be the year for Roger Deakins?  Deakins is nominated for his work on Blade Runner 2049 but is facing heavy competition, including a historic nomination for Mudbound cinematographer Rachel Morrison.

As far as Best Picture goes, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri took home the Best Film at the BAFTA Awards but the voting body tends to skew towards British-made films.  It’s likely to go neck-and-neck with The Shape of Water but don’t be surprised to see a film like Dunkirk find a way to sneak through.
