‘The Hate U Give’ Releases First Trailer

“Find your voice, change the world.”

20th Century Fox released the first official trailer for the film based on Angie Thomas’ break-through young-adult novel, The Hate U Give, during Sunday night’s BET Awards ceremony. Initially, there was a teaser for the film released exclusively to attendees of this year’s BookCon, but now the world has been treated to a full-length trailer for this highly anticipated movie.

Directed by George Tillman, Jr., The Hate U Give stars Amandla Stenberg as Starr Carter, a young black teenager who works on balancing two different worlds in her life: living in the poor and predominantly black neighborhood of Garden Heights, while also attending an upper-class and predominantly white school. It’s not easy, transitioning back and forth between her two lifestyles, but Starr makes it work; however, after she witnesses her best friend Khalil (Algee Smith) get fatally shot by a white police officer, the already strained link that connects her to both worlds becomes shattered. This tragedy catapults Starr into activism, advocating for justice not only for her best friend’s murder, but for every victim of police brutality and systemic racism.

In this emotionally gripping, powerful, and relevant tale, Starr Carter must find her voice within herself, and fight and stand up for what is right.

The Hate U Give will be released in theaters on Friday, October 19.
