On the Basis of Sex: Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic drops first trailer

Focus Features has released the first trailer for On the Basis of Sex.  The film, due out in December, goes back in time to tell the story of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as she fought against gender discrimination with her husband, Martin.

This is a big year for the Supreme Court Justice, who marks 25 years on the Supreme Court in August.  A new documentary from filmmakers Julie Cohen and Betsy West premiered during the Sundance Film Festival and opened in theaters this past spring.  A comprehensive biography written by Jane De Hart will hit bookstores this October.  On the Basis of Sex only adds to the RBG media cannon when Felicity Jones takes on the role of “the Notorious RBG” as they say.

Similar to Marshall, the film focuses on one case early in Ginsburg’s career.  The case is one in which the future justice teams up with her husband, Martin (Armie Hammer), to argue a case before the U.S. Court of Appeals in an effort to overturn gender discrimination.

The Leftovers’ Mimi Leder directs the film from a screenplay written by Daniel Stiepleman.  This is the first produced film for the screenwriter. Felicity Jones leads a cast that includes Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Kathy Bates, Sam Waterston, Jack Reynor, and Cailee Spaeny.

On the Basis of Sex opens in theaters on December 25, 2018.
