New Trailer For Steve McQueen’s ‘Widows’

Summer’s almost over and the fall festival season is shaping up to have some major contenders for the title of Best Movie of 2018. But in case the world has gone dizzy from the line-ups at Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival, it’s important to remind everyone that Steve McQueen is back this year.

The Oscar-winning writer/director’s fourth feature, Widows, is set for release this fall and 20th Century Fox released the first full-length trailer for the crime drama on Wednesday. Based on Lynda La Plante’s novel of the same name, Widows boasts not only McQueen’s first feature in four years after the success of 12 Years a Slave but also a script written by McQueen and Gillian Flynn, writer of Gone Girl and Sharp Objects. The cast is also top-notch with Oscar-winner Viola Davis (Fences), Michelle Rodriguez (The Fast and the Furious), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) and the feature film debut of Tony-winner Cynthia Erivo (The Color Purple). Colin Farrell, Daniel Kaluuya, Brian Tyree Henry and Robert Duvall co-star.

Widows is set in modern-day Chicago and follows four wives grieving over the loss of their husbands. To their shock, it turns out their dearly departed were shot after attempting a robbery and were ambushed by police. While they grieve, criminals start harassing them looking to collect what their husbands stole from them. With the local authorities turning a blind eye, the wives team-up to plan a scheme of their own and wash their hands of their husbands’ sins.

Comparing this to 12 Years a SlaveWidows is a more stripped-down project for McQueen to undertake. That certainly doesn’t mean he slacked off on this, as the trailer shows some intense action scene and confrontations that build tension. Most of Widows seems to be a character-based drama with the four wives overcoming grief and executing some kind of perfect heist. It’s certainly believable that the almighty Viola Davis has the brains and brawn to be the mastermind, and Michelle Rodriguez has never hesitated to punch someone in the face in a movie. With Gillian Flynn’s blunt, quippy and critical dialogue to read from, it’s hard not to see why this will certainly be one of the most anticipated movies of the year.

Widows comes to theaters November 16. What do you think of the trailer? Let us know in the comments and stay with The Young Folks for the latest movie news and trailers.
