At the Pokémon World Championships this morning, The Pokémon Company and Legendary pictures revealed the full title and logo for the upcoming live action film based on the games – Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.
Based on the game of the same name; the logo is a neon sign, not unlike what might be seen outside of a private detective’s building in any other crime-noir film, or Hideo Kojima’s Policenauts. Director Rob Letterman took the stage during the Championship’s opening ceremonies to debut the logo and speak briefly about the film; backed up by stars Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton. The actors each had their own stories to tell about growing up with the now 20-year-old franchise. Letterman then spoke about a sequence in the film featuring a showdown between Pikachu and the draconic mascot of Pokémon Red Version, Charizard. The three led the crowd in cheers for the two creatures that Letterman indicated would be used for the film.
A notable absence from the proceedings was Pikachu himself in any form. Ryan Reynolds, cast as the voice of the titular character was not on hand and we’ve yet to see how the film plans to depict any Pokémon-something sure to be critical to the how the film is received. Even so, the reality that the world is going to see a live-action Pokémon film is coming ever nearer-while the logo indicates a broad “Summer 2019” release, Rob Letterman specifically mentioned the month of May as the target release date.
