Tim Burton and Josh Brolin teaming up for ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’

Remakes are HUGE in Hollywood right now. After Alice in Wonderland doing phenomenally at the box office and winning two Oscars, every producer in Hollywood is trying to get their hands on some sort of classic remake material.

It was just announced that Tim Burton and Josh Brolin will work together on a new adaptation of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Currently, Burton is working on his Dark Shadows adaptation, and is attached to produce or direct several other films, including Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. So far, he is only to produce Hunchback, but he did say that if he likes the script a lot, he’ll consider becoming more involved.

The script is being written by the Sherlock Holmes screenwriters, Kieran and Michele Mulroney. I’m assuming this will give us an idea of what kind of spin or tone they’ll give The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Josh Brolin is set to star as the lead character. A surprise since many usually expect Johnny Depp to take the lead in a Burton film.

Hunchback isn’t the only classic to get the remake treatment. As we reported a few weeks ago, three Snow White remakes are in development, and Peter Pan has been pitched with Channing Tatum attached. Joe Roth (the guy behind one of the Snow White remakes) is behind this pitch. The movie is to be called Peter Pan Begins. I’m guessing it’s an origin story.

Personally, I love the classics, but I think all of these remakes are beyond gratuitous. In the next year or two, these movies will be flooding the cinemas, and audiences may get sick of them, and all this will backfire on producers. I may see some of them, but at this point, I’ll staying away.
