It’s ladies night next February for fans of the DC Extended Universe.
The first full-length trailer for Birds of Prey hit the internet on Tuesday October 1st. The latest movie entry in the DCEU continues Warner Bros. and DC’s shift into lighter, more colorful material after the success of this year’s Shazam! It also marks the grand return of Margot Robbie’s distinct portrayal of the beloved Batman villain Harley Quinn, a very important occasion given how the movie’s subtitle: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.
Based on the DC Comics spinoff series, Birds of Prey follows Ms. Quinn after splitting up with longtime love/abuser, The Joker (canonically last seen as played by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad). Free of her makeup-faced manipulator, she decides to hang around Gotham City where she meets three other female badasses: Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), The Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). They team up to save a young girl from Gotham’s latest crime boss, Black Mask (Ewan McGregor).
Little has been known or released about the movie since filming wrapped back in April. Despite Robbie reprising her role, nothing has been mentioned about Birds of Prey being in the same canon as Suicide Squad or if it will be in line with writer/director James Gunn’s reboot/sequel The Suicide Squad which recently started filming with Robbie confirmed to return. There’s not even a confirmed runtime or rating for the movie.

What is known is that the script comes courtesy of Christina Hodson (Bumblebee, Shut In) and the movie was directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs). Also set to appear in the movie is Chris Messina (Away We Go, Devil) as fellow Batman villain Victor Zsasz, a sadistic serial killer known for tallying up his victims by marking his own body.
This will be the second live-action adaptation of Birds of Prey after the ill-fated 2002 TV series that only lasted for one season. On the upside, fans of that show will get to see series star Ashley Scott reprise her role as The Huntress in the upcoming “Crisis On Infinite Earths” crossover event between WB and DC’s TV superhero projects: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.
