Oscar Buzz: ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ Takes Top Prize at Gotham Awards

Tonight, The Gotham Independent Film Awards took place. The Gotham Awards can be a good indicator of which independent films to keep an eye on during Oscar season. The big winner of the night was Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. Moonrise Kingdom released in spring of this year and had seemed far from our minds recently when thinking of awards contenders. But the Gotham Awards pushed them back to the forefront, along with another acclaimed indie, Beasts of the Southern Wild. In addition, there were quite  a few unexpected wins. Your Sister’s Sister won best ensemble against the casts of Moonrise, Silver Linings Playbook and other much more praised films. The documentary, Artifact, surprisingly beat out nominees that included Beasts to win the Audience Award.

Do you think Moonrise Kingdom and Beasts of the Southern Wild deserve serious awards recognition? Sound off in the comments, and check out all the winners from this year’s Gotham Awards below!
