This Month in Film: February 2013 Releases

We survived January which wasn’t a terrible month, but still pretty lackluster. As we move into February, the releases get a tiny bit more interesting. Sure, we have the action movies that will land on President’s Day weekend and the romances on Valentine’s Day. The rest is an eclectic mix of dramas, comedies and horror that are sure to catch many people’s interests.

Warm Bodies Read our review – I saw this movie back in December and loved it! It’s quirky, and I think many people will find it unexpectedly entertaining. This is your best bet for this weekend.

Bullet to the Head – Sylvester Stallone’s new action movie looks… pretty familiar. I feel like it’s a combination of subplots from previous action movies rolled into one.

Stand Up Guys – The only attractive thing Stand Up Guys has going for it is its cast: Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin.

Identity Thief – From the makers of Horrible Bosses is a new comedy starring Jason Bateman and the hilarious Melissa McCartney. I heard this movie is actually very funny. It’s nice to hear that February is giving us a decent comedy this year.

Side Effects – I saw this last week, and it was sooooo good. I’ll have a review up closer to the film’s release, but for now just take my word that Steven Soderbergh’s latest movie is not one to miss. Jude Law and Rooney Mara are great in it! Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones also star.

Thursday, February 14th – Happy Valentine’s Day

Beautiful Creatures – I’ve had my eye on this Young Adult adaptation for a while. I read the book a few years ago, but became even more interested when production began on the movie. With a strong cast like Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis and Emma Thompson supporting newcomers Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert, I’m curious to see how well Beautiful Creatures fairs critically and at the box office. It has a solid storyline, and I hope the actors give it enough flair to enhance the story and turn it into a great movie.

Safe Haven – It’s Valentine’s Day! Did you not expect a new Nicholas Sparks movie? This one follows two good looking people, Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel, as one tries to escape a dangerous past and the other learns to love again. If you see one Sparks movie, you’ve seen them all if you ask me. (Only exception is The Notebook.)

A Good Day to Die HardIs it a good day to die hard? Bruce Willis will let you know as he tears Russia up in the newest installment to the Die Hard franchise.

Escape from Planet Earth – Is it just me or have you heard anything about this movie? I just found out about this new animated film when researching this list. It looks pretty generic, but I think young children will enjoy it.

Friday, February 22nd

Snitch – This is probably the only action movie I’m looking forward to seeing this month. For one thing, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars in it, and the story actually looks pretty good. I’m sold.

Dark Skies – If you’re looking for a creepy alien invasion thriller, Dark Skies is a good bet. Even though it does look a little cliché, the trailer did manage to freak me out.
