The 28th Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony took place this afternoon (and will air tonight on IFC at 10p ET/PT). It’s considered the “Oscars” for independent film and is usually one of my favorite awards of the season because it honors movies that the Academy has either snubbed or ignored.
Silver Linings Playbook was the big winner of the night. It received several awards including Best Feature, Director and Actress. It’s no surprise that SLP won so many awards, even though films like Beasts of the Southern Wild and Moonrise Kingdom are considered more “independent” features by me. However, I’m very happy that The Perks of Being A Wallflower, a movie that The Young Folks writing team all adored, finally garner a win this awards season. Director/writer Stephen Chbosky took home the Best First Feature Award. Also, Derek Connelly won the Best First Screenplay award for the wonderful and underseen Safety Not Guaranteed.
