SDCC: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1

The first film panel at San Diego Comic Con was none other than The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Twilight is usually one of the most popular panels at SDCC. Fans started lining up three days before the panel to snatch a seat upfront. While we aren’t that dedicated, we did get in line around 2am so we can get a coveted seat for the panel.

Either it was severely over-hyped or the craze died down, but this year’s Twilight crowd was pretty mellow. I was expecting eardrum shattering screaming and pure craziness. It wasn’t like that at all.

The panel was okay, a little more than boring. Director Bill Condon talked about taking on the last part of the Twilight Saga, only willing to talk about Part 1 of Breaking Dawn. Kristen Stewart was more talkative than usual, fielding questions left and right with enthusiasm. Rob seemed a little lost, but calm. Taylor was his usual, charming self. Later on in the panel, more of the cast came onstage, which included Ashley Greene, Elizabeth Reaser, Julia Jones and Nikki Reed.

Two new clips debuted during the panel. The first one was a scene in which Jacob speaks with Carlisle, saying something along the lines of that he will try to defend the Cullen’s from Sam and his wolfpack. But in the next scene, Jacob is making a deal with Sam to destroy the Cullen’s.  Confused? Well, this is a new scene added to the movie that wasn’t in the book. In my opinion, it was pretty bad. As adorable as Taylor Lautner is, the boy isn’t the best actor. The scene just looked really dumb and out of place. I lost track of how many times I rolled my eyes during it.

The second clip that debuted was better. It was the beginning of Bella and Edward’s honeymoon scene. It starts off with the standard Bella and Edward awkwardness. But when Edward leaves to let Mrs. Cullen have “a human minute,” there’s a comedic, little montage of Bella panicking and getting ready for her honeymoon night. It was funny, cute, and entertaining, not a hint of awkwardness. But then the little montage ended, we were back to same song and dance.  I will admit that the set and actors look beautiful; Condon has made the Twilight universe even prettier.

The Q&A portion of the panel was typically banal. There were the cute little girls, who would ask cute questions. But other than that, the questions were sort of no-brainers.
