SDCC: Film District’s ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’ & ‘Drive’

Hands down, Film District had the most interesting and entertaining panel at Comic Con. Film District was promoting two of their films during their panel, Guillermo del Toro’s Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive. Right off, Film District made the right decision to put both movies on stage at once. So we were instantly greeted by the following: Troy Nixey, Guy Pearce, Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Winding Refn, Carey Mulligan and Ron Perlman.

This panel practically didn’t need a moderator. Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn were too busy asking each other questions and providing very interesting insight on film-making. Their stories and explanations were so entertaining. The rest of the panelists were just as great and interesting.

A new trailer was debuted for Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. It looks very scary. Director Troy Nixey, writer Guillermo del Toro and star Guy Pearce discussed the film. The trailer and a new clip debuted for Drive. Unfortunately, star Ryan Gosling couldn’t make it, but the director Refn, and stars Carey Mulligan and Ron Perlman were there to talk about the film.

If you haven’t watched the trailer for Drive yet, what are you waiting for? It’s amazing, and the new clip is so intense, crazy and good. We were lucky to get to screen Drive after the panel; our review will post in a couple days. But here’s a teaser: WE LOVED IT.

Anyway, the videos of the panel say much more than I can write about it. Listen to the filmmakers talking about getting the right cast, and especially Refn’s story on when he met Ryan Gosling. It’s just too perfect. I absolutely recommend watching that video before you see Drive.
