SDCC: Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Twixt’

Francis Ford Coppola made a rare and big public appearance in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con. The director was there to promote his latest movie, Twixt, along with star Val Kilmer and musician Dan Deacon.

I found Twixt to be one of the best panels at SDCC. While many may find Coppola wacky, I thought he had a very clever idea. Twixt is a 3D gothic horror film. It’s low budget, but from the footage we saw, it has a certain charm that makes it interesting. Much of what Coppola talked about is how “canned” cinema is nowadays. He wants to return to how cinema used to be and offer audiences a unique experience. Hence, he is going on tour with Twixt, offering each city a new remix of the film. In addition, the musical score of the film will be played live during the film.

The panel was a dress rehearsal of sorts. Coppola played around with the scenes, did the voiceover himself, Deacon played some music to accompany a scene. We probably saw the same footage three or four times, but it was fun and entertaining. We got a real glimpse of what this Twixt tour could be like, and I’m ready to buy my ticket for it when available.
