When it comes to Disney movies, there are a couple of things that come to mind: princesses and princes, villains and of course, sidekicks! I’m going to list some of my favorite sidekicks in the movies we’ve all grown up with, in no particular order. But what is it about sidekicks that we love so much? They tend to be adorable, funny and mischievous at the same time– something every movie character should be. But we can’t have all characters with the same personality, so without further ado, here are the best (in my opinion) Disney sidekicks! Note: Disney/Pixar films are not included.

I just love this guy. Probably one of my absolute favorite sidekicks– he totally makes the movie. This is Mushu from the Disney movie Mulan. He’s voiced by Eddie Murphy and is the sole supplier of laughs and wit. He has some one-liners that are really laugh out loud funny!

[tps_title] Genie from Aladdin [/tps_title]

Genie is probably the most lovable sidekick around. He’s voiced by the incredible Robin Williams and brings all the laughs to the film. He also has the coolest song and helps Aladdin get the girl! He’s sweet, cuddly and can put you in a pile of gold if you want! What’s not to love?

[tps_title] Sebastian, Flounder & Scuttle from The Little Mermaid [/tps_title]

Let’s briefly mention that my favorite Disney movie of ALL TIME is The Little Mermaid and my favorite Disney princess EVER is Ariel. So with that said, it is practically impossible for me to pick a favorite sidekick because they’re all so different and important in the movie! First, there’s Sebastian– King Triton’s main man, well, crab. He is the eyes and ears of the ocean and keeps everyone in check, including Ariel. Yeah he tells on Ariel and brings King Triton to Ariel’s secret trove, but he can put together a hell of a musical performance and directed one of the most iconic Disney songs, Under the Sea! With Flouder, my favorite little guppy, we have the timid, cowardly loyal friend to Ariel. He is so sweet and kind and is always there for Ariel. Last, but certainly not least, Scuttle. He acts like Ariel’s encyclopedia and is the only other animal, besides Max, who has any tie to the human world. He tells Ariel what he thinks her new human gadgets and trinkets are even though he’s totally wrong, but I think that’s what makes him so likable!

[tps_title]Timon & Pumbaa from The Lion King [/tps_title]

First, let’s talk about how much these two accomplished after doing The Lion King. They also came back for The Lion King 2  and had their own movie The Lion King 1 & 1/2 (which is a great movie I might add). Timon and Pumbaa compliment each other so well and have this weird sense of humor I can’t help but love. I mean, can we talk about that part in Hakuna Matata where they talk about how Pumbaa’s friends couldn’t handle his farts? Classic! Who could forget Timon’s famous hula dance to distract the hyenas from attacking Simba in the big final battle by telling them how yummy Pumbaa would taste?! I can’t decided if they’re brilliant or just have a sick sense of humor! Maybe, a bit of both. Anyway, they’re hysterical and are just such good sports about everything.

[tps_title]Lumiere and Cogsworth from Beauty and the Beast [/tps_title]

Speaking of another duo, Lumiere and Cogsworth are two hopeless romantics with quite the funny bone… well… not bones exactly, but you know what I mean. They’re both complete opposites but they compliment each other almost as well as Timon and Pumbaa do. First off, Be Our Guest is one of those musical numbers that you can’t help but sing along to. You know as soon as Lumiere says “Be….. Our….” you have to finish it off with “GUEST!” and continue singing for the rest of the songs. It’s infectious! Cogsworth is Lumiere’s counterpart, he’s proper and is all about following the rules. But he has stood by the Beast for all this time and they’re both so into Belle and Beast falling in love, they even give him advice on how to make her fall in love with him. Talk about being great wingmen! Also can I mention how feisty Lumiere is with that feather duster? LOVE.

[tps_title]Pegasus from Hercules [/tps_title]

I want one person to tell me they didn’t fall in love with Pegasus as soon as he popped out of his cloud. Probably one of the most adorable little sidekicks I’ve ever encountered. The scene where Hercules and Pegasus meet for the first time literally melts my heart. Besides the fact that he’s adorable, he grows up to be Herc’s best friend. He helps him become a God and even tries to steer him away from Meg knowing she was bad news! Okay, well they end up together, but he knew she was up to no good while she was working for Hades, talk about horse sense! He’s also one of the sidekicks that doesn’t speak but is still as lovable as those who do speak.

[tps_title]Tinkerbell from Peter Pan [/tps_title]

Let’s face it, Tinkerbell is a TOTAL bitch. She might not be these days in Disney’s new fairy world, but in Peter Pan  she really knows how to make Wendy’s life a living hell while she’s in Neverland. But there is no one on this earth, or Neverland for that matter, that loves Peter more than Tinkerbell. She loves him so much, she’s even willing to blow herself up just to save him. That alone is an admirable quality and gives her a spot on this list. She’s definitely not my favorite, but her bitchiness and ability to love are praiseworthy.

[tps_title]Pascal from Tangled [/tps_title]

Some people may not be familiar with Pascal, he’s a silent character in the movie Tangled — which happens to be one of my favorite, recent, Disney films. First of all, the music and princess in this movie are absolutely perfect and the love interest, Flynn, is also a total babe. But we can’t forget how important Pascal really is. I mean, HE was the one that got rid of Mother Gothel! Spoiler alert? He’s an adorable little chameleon who licks ears, plays dress up with the locked up princess, Rapunzel, and has the ability to save the day in the end! Another non-speaking sidekick who stole my heart the moment I met him.

[tps_title]Meeko from Pocahontas [/tps_title]

By now, we’ve realized that Disney has the ability to make the most disgusting/repulsive animals adorable and lovable. Another one of my favorites is Meeko from PocahontasLet me mention I’m not one of those people who is particularly fond of the movie Pocahontas but all the creatures she encounters are adorable and make me like the movie (kinda). Basically, Meeko is a total fatty. He’s always stuffing his face with those biscuits John Smith is carrying around and he’s always up for adventure, even though jumping over water falls kind of freaks him out. Meeko stands by Pocahontas no matter who she chooses; a great role model for raccoons and sidekicks everywhere.

[tps_title] Abu from Aladdin [/tps_title]

Last but not least, of course, we have Abu from Aladdin. Practically perfect in every way. He helps Aladdin get through his days of poverty by assisting him in stealing all the apples, cantaloupe and loaves of bread he can find. All the while making the cave of wonders melt into the desert! Luckily, he was smart enough to stay with the magic lamp and bring Genie into the film which we mentioned before. Did I mention he can do some damage with a sword? Yet another non-speaking sidekick who shows charisma and humor without saying a word. One of my favorite things about Disney sidekicks is that I can love them whether they speak or not. Abu is also adorably grumpy, which just makes me love him even more.

So there you have it. My picks for the top Disney sidekicks. I know I missed a few. Actually, I probably missed a bunch! But it really is so hard to pick especially when you love Disney so much. Which Disney sidekick is your favorite? Make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments! Until next time.
