As you may know, I do consider myself a HUGE David Fincher fan, hence, while I was at the Straw Dogs screening in Miami and they announced that they were going to show an exclusive 8 minute preview from David Fincher’s ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ I was beyond excited!
Not only did the mysterious Mouth Taped Shut blog tweeted that if you were in some selected cities in the US they would contact you to do something on if you were free on Thursday night. I know its Wednesday night but I’m pretty sure this is what Mouth Taped Shut was talking about.
The 8 minutes were basically some sort of introduction to the American audience to the characters of Stieg Larsson’s novel. Let me begin by saying that the moment it starts, the first thing I noticed was Trent Reznor’s score that contained similar sounds to those of The Social Network soundtrack, meaning we get subtle piano beats that later escalates to pounding upbeat sounds in the last minutes of the clip, where we see a fast montage of scenes that later ends with an amazing shot of Lisbeth (Rooney Mara) exiting a tunnel. The essence of Fincher’s filmmaking makes a statement here, we get some shots of Sweden as well as shots of Lisbeth (Rooney Mara) upside down that are basically a Fincher trademark in a way.
From the 8 minute clip, I feel as if this movie is a copy of the Swedish film, but it does feel as if it has an edge to it, maybe its Fincher’s perspective, the cinematography, the score, etc. As for the characters, they seem the same as from the original film, just with American accents, and Rooney Mara faintly having a Swedish accent, we even get to see a scene where she is at a club and is hooking up with a girl that as far as my memory goes, I did not see in the Swedish version, you following me on the edgy thing right? I think Fincher is kind of making it sexier as well as darker, it feels as if the pace in this version is kind of making a slow burn as the movie progresses. Also, the yellow tone for the flashback scenes helped the audience tell the difference with what was happening in the past or in the present. About Michael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) the only thing different I could notice from the movie was the scene where he barges into Lisbeth’s house and sees that her girlfriend is in bed and clearly tells her to get out of there which in a way was kind of funny.
Can I just say that Sony is doing a fantastic job promoting this film? Not only does it create buzz for it but they’re taking the risk of showing an 8 minute clip of one of the years most anticipated films, seeing how the audience reacts to it and adding some sort of mystery with this whole Mouth Taped Shut blog, it would be as if Lisbeth herself is a hacker at Fincher’s studio giving us “leaked” information. I cannot wait to see it, don’t care if the only thing that they change is the language that they speak, it looks great (and sounds great) and can’t wait to see what Mouth Taped Shut has in store for us. Thank you David Fincher, thank you.
Note: apparently this is being shown nationwide, so look out for Straw Dogs screenings happening tomorrow or anything related to Sony because you’ll most likely end up seeing it before the screening you attend!
