“The Fantastic Four” Reboot Has a Cast!

After months of speculation, rumors, and false reports, Fox’s new cinematic adaptation of “Fantastic Four” has a cast. Set to be directed by Josh Trank, of the terrific Chronicle (a film that points towards Trank’s talent with superhero stories), the cast includes both those who have been rumored for some time and those new to the conversation. Fantastic Four was previously adapted in a film series in 2005 and 2007, with Ioan Gruffud, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis filling out the blue tights.

Now, The Wrap reports that Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jaime Bell are our new Fantastic Four. It is currently unknown who will play the series’ villain, Doctor Doom.

Miles Teller
will play Mister Fantastic, aka Reed Richards.  Teller’s career is on a hot streak right now, with roles in last year’s excellent indie coming-of-age romance The Spectacular Now, this year’s Sundance festival favorite Whiplash, the modest hit from earlier this year That Awkward Moment, and a sizable role in the heavily anticipated new Young Adult novel adaptation Divergent. Teller has shown to have a wry charisma that could prove perfect for Mister Fantastic. Mister Fantastic is the leader of the Fantastic Four, a highly intelligent scientist with the ability to stretch and shift his body in an extreme fashion.

Michael B. Jordan will play The Human Torch, aka Johnny Storm. Jordan’s career is following a similar trajectory to Teller; they both appeared in That Awkward Moment, and Jordan starred in last year’s Sundance favorite and indie hit Fruitvale Station. Jordan also has a previous relationship with Fantastic Four director Josh Trank as one of the stars of Chronicle. Jordan is also noted for his terrific work on the TV shows The Wire and Friday Night Lights. Jordan has an intensity and humanity that lends itself perfectly to Johnny Storm. As the name suggests, The Human Torch has the ability to control and manipulate fire and heat, as well as an immunity towards its affects. He is the youngest member of the Fantastic Four and the brother of Sue Storm.

Kate Mara will play The Invisible Woman, aka Sue Storm. Mara is most widely known for her work on the Netflix series House of Cards and American Horror Story: Murder House. She will next be seen in the upcoming scifi film Transcendence, co-starring Johnny Depp. Sue Storm is the older brother of Johnny, and as the moniker The Invisible Woman suggests she has the ability to render herself invisible. She is also frequently linked as a romantic partner to Reed Richards.

Jamie Bell will play The Thing, aka Ben Grimm. Bell first came to attention with the title role in Billy Elliot, and has since appeared in diverse films such as King Kong, Jumper, and The Adventures of Tintin. He will next be seen in Lars Von Trier’s two part film Nymphomaniac. Bell has extensive motion capture work from his time on Tintin, and one can only imagine that they will achieve The Thing for this film under a similar method. The Thing has superhuman strength and despite his form as a giant rock monster remains quick and agile. He is the brute force of the Fantastic Four and best friend to Reed Richards.

If Fox does not have a Fantastic Four film in production soon, the cinematic rights to the characters will revert back to Marvel. Fox has no intention of letting these characters go, though, despite allowing the same to happen with Daredevil last year.

Fox plans to release The Fantastic Four on June 19th, 2015.
