Film News: Chloe Grace Moretz takes the lead in ‘The 5th Wave’

Several young folks deemed Rick Yancey’s alien invasion thriller, The 5th Wave, as one of 2013’s best books. It comes as no surprise that we’re curious about the possibility of this absorbing and terrifying story hitting the big screen. This past week proves that we are one step closer to another YA movie adaptation when it was revealed that Chloe Grace Moretz is in final negotiations to play one of the book’s leads, Cassie Sullivan.

The Wrap reports:

“Moretz is nearing a deal to play Cassie Sullivan, who survives four waves of deadly attacks against the Earth’s population. On the run to save her younger brother, 16-year-old Cassie meets a mysterious young man who may become her final hope.

GK Films acquired rights to the project back in March 2012 when it purchased a proposal for a young adult trilogy from author Yancey, whose novel was published in May 2013 by Penguin. Sony is co-financing and distributing.”

As we mentioned last month in our post revealing the cover to The 5th Wave’s sequel, The Infinite Sea, J Blakeson (“The Disappearance of Alice Creed”) is set to direct the film, while Susannah Grant (“Erin Brockovich”) will adapt the screenplay. There’s no word on who else will be cast in the film.

Chloe Grace Moretz is one of young Hollywood’s most promising talents, and I’m excited to see her tackle on an alien invasion. Physically, she fits the role, and her past work has proven that she has the nuance to play someone as real as Cassie. If all goes “according to plan” (which is such a rarity in Hollywood), I’ll be interested to see who else is cast and how the book translates into cinema. Being a fan of both mediums, The 5th Wave has ton of potential to be a great film.
