Walking through the hall way of the Loews Hollywood hotel for the Blended press junket was like getting a tiny glimpse of the African safari that the cast got to go on for the filming of this movie. Once inside there were reporters lining the walls waiting for their one-on-one with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler.
I was directed to head over to the last conference room where the press junket would take place. I saved my seat towards the front and I went back outside in hopes that I could get a selfie with Drew or Bella Thorn, who plays Adam Sandlers daughter. No luck getting the actual selfie with the lovely ladies, but I did catch them taking a selfie of their own. Once everyone was situated the floor was opened up to questions for the cast.
First Question asked was about Drew and Adams on-screen chemistry and how has it changed in the last sixteen years:
Drew: For me it all stems with respect…I love this person so much it’s amazing. But when it comes down to us one-on-one alone in the playing field doing our thing it’s like total respect.
Adam: That’s right.
Drew: Giddy, giddy respect, ha ha.
Adam: I love Drew, I’ve known her for a long time and all 3 movies we’ve had the pleasure of falling in love. In the first two I faked it, but in this one I really did.
Drew was asked about her new baby and new challenges:
Drew: What really got me about this film and when I watch the movie, is I want it to be funny cuz I need to laugh and I need heart and want emotion…When these people talk about just wanting to be good parents and wanting to be happy and how are they going to function in this world that just gets me and it makes me cry… especially when these kids need something. When Bella and I did our scene together I couldn’t get through with out crying… Mom’s are my Achilles heal.
Reporter: That’s great, how’s the baby?
I’m really happy, everything is great I couldn’t be happier [with my new baby].
When asked about casting the kids for the movie:
Adam: My kids love Bella, I would have no idea , by the way, who you were if it wasn’t for my two kids. We watch the Disney channel a lot, over and over, and I was like who is that kid? She’s funny. When we were casting this movie [ I asked my kids] who’s that kid from “Shake it up”? Bella Thorne! Bella Thorne– yeah we gotta get her. [Because of Bella] I got closer with my kids.
Drew: I am more crazy about Bella Thorne than words could ever express.
When asked how similar Bella is to her character:
Bella: I am very much a tom boy I love to eat chicken wings, slurp top ramen, I have stains all over my clothes… I feel every girl can [relate] to this character because there is a lot of times when you wanna get out of your own skin and she just wants to be noticed. She wants this boy to notice that she’s a girl and he doesn’t, that’s the worst part. And she’s looking for a new mother figure and she’s put in this position with her father because she’s his best buddy.
The other cast members were asked about their similarities with their characters as well but I won’t spoil it for you, you’re going to have to see the movie. One character in particular that wasn’t at the press junket, who very much stole the spotlight in the movie, was Terry Crews. His character is the most hilarious and will have you busting out laughing so hard tears will run down your face, or maybe that’s just me.
I really enjoyed the film. I thought it was a bit too slow at the beginning with getting “Lauren” and “Jim” together but once they were on the African safari and they started to hit it off I was reminded of their “on-screen magic.”
For a good laugh catch Blended is in theaters right now.
