Feels like we are getting bombarded by football news all over the place, isn’t? Oh, come on, football (soccer) is not that bad, it’s actually quite fun to play and watch! If you don’t believe me, let’s see if Diego Luna can convince you. He recently directed a small short about the most beloved sport in the world and how – no matter how old you are or where you live – it always manages to bring a smile to everyone. The short is part of Pepsi Max’s Beats of the Beautiful Game visual album – a collection of 11 anthemic songs and companion short films that capture the spirit, sights and sounds of football.
Here’s a small synopsis of the film:
Coming off the success of his critically acclaimed biopic, César Chávez, Luna captures the power football has to bring joy and youthfulness to a community. In Mexico City, a group of young at heart senior citizens over age 60 formed the Liga de Interclubes de Fútbol Soccer Amateur to discard the weight of life and play the sport they love. Luna’s beautiful film shows us the joy the timeless game of football provides – no matter the age.
Luna is no stranger to football films. Alongside Gael García Bernal, he starred in 2009 in Rudo Y Cursi, a film in which two close friends play aspiring footballers trying to make it big in Mexico City. The 6-minute long film is accompanied by British artist Rita Ora‘s song “I Will Never Let You Down (Switch Remix)” which is a remix of Ora’s third No. 1 single in the UK .
