Film News: Benicio Del Toro Not In ‘Star Trek 2’

Part of the fun and games of writing news stories is that yesterday’s 99% certain casting announcement can be squashed completely the very next day. Rumors that Benicio Del Toro would be playing the villain in J.J. Abrams’ second installment of the ‘Star Trek‘ franchise had been circling for quite some time. But today Vulture has confirmed that Del Toro will not be in Star Trek 2:

“Benicio Del Toro, who entered into talks last month to play the sequel’s new villain. Insiders tell Vulture that the deal actually went asunder last Wednesday after parties couldn’t come to terms over monetary issues.”

So now that we know that Del Toro isn’t going to play Khan speculation is open again for who will. It seems certain that Khan will be the villain of Trek 2, given that this has been a steady rumor since the confirmation that Abrams would be helming a sequel. Latino Review claimed to have confirmed that choice of villain, though Abrams promptly replied to Hitfix that the report was “not true.” As with all casting rumors we have to take them with a grain of salt until we get confirmation from the studio, the director or the actors themselves.

Until then, who do you think should play the villain in Star Trek 2? Do you think Khan will be the villain? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below!
