See Johnny Depp and His Mustache in “Mortdecai” Teaser Trailer

Johnny Depp hasn’t had a great run these last few years. A string of high profile flops, including Transcendence, The Lone Ranger, and Dark Shadows, has somewhat turned the tide against his popular star image, while his ability to draw audiences, something studios once took for granted, no longer seems such a sure thing.

In any case, Depp continues to move forward, taking on roles that showcase his favored eccentric characters in a variety of different contexts. Next he’ll appear in the starry adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical Into the Woods, which hits theaters this winter. Not long after, he’ll be seen in Mortdecai, a teaser trailer for which was released today.

The film, based on a series of novels by Kyril Bonfiglioli, stars Depp as the eponymous Charlie Mortdecai, a dashingly mustached yet bumptious art dealer who travels the globe with manservant Jock Strapp in search of lost Nazi gold. The loot is ostensibly hidden in a painting, and it’s up to the two to find it – while warding off the inevitable international threats along the way, of course. Plenty of screwball antics ensue. Joining Depp in the caper are Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Goldblum, Olivia Munn, and Paul Bettany.

What do you think? Are you grooving to the teaser’s globe-hopping glitz and cheeky charms? Or is this just another sorry entry into a misbegotten line of Depp misfires? Watch the trailer above and let us know!

Mortdecai, directed by David Koepp, will be released by Lionsgate on February 6, 2015.
