Weekend box office estimates are in and this September is finishing on a strong note!
#1 – The Equalizer
He’s Denzel friggin’ Washington and if he’s starring in a movie it’s guaranteed to open over $20 million. Add in the appeal factors of ass-kicking gore and Chloe Moretz as a young Russian prostitute and you’ve got a $35M opening weekend. With good word of mouth and ok-but-not-spectacular reviews, expect to see a possible total over $100 million. There’s been a lot of talk about turning this into a series and it looks like the only missing piece now is getting Denzel to sign on, something he’s never done before. Good luck to whoever’s job it is to get him on board.
#2 – The Maze Runner
With a stellar second week retention in terms of YA movies, The Maze Runner grabbed another $17.5M for a tentative total of $58M. Overseas, the movie is making a killing as well. Don’t be surprised to see these young male stars, Dylan O’Brien (a.k.a the Teenwolf panty-dropper) in particular, pop up more often on the big screen in the next couple years. The only question left is does this movie have the steam to race past a $100 million total stateside.
#3 – The Boxtrolls

I’m going to be honest, I look at an upcoming children’s movie like Big Hero 6 and then I look at this and I genuinely don’t see the appeal. Luckily, the movie was able to grab $17.3 million in its opening weekend, which is a big success for stop-motion animation considering some see it as a doomed filmmaking process. We’ll have to wait and see how much cash those weird little box monsters can grab in the long run, but for now the execs over at Focus Features are breathing a sigh of relief.
#4 – This is Where I Leave You
If you came around these parts last weekend, you’d know this movie had a somewhat limp opening. While a solid second weekend hold brought in $7 million, this pic isn’t entirely out of the water. It’s going to need to continue to bring in the older audience if it hopes to make its current total of $22.5 million look a little more like $40 million. But hey, DDJF. Don’t doubt Jane Fonda. I’m sorry, I don’t know why I feel the need to make a joke about her every week…
#5 – Dolphin Tale 2

It’s the little film that could. With direct competition from The Boxtrolls, this family oriented pic was still able to stay in the game. Still, a $4.8 million weekend for a $33.6 million total and counting is somewhat of a downer if you expected this film to come anywhere close to the original film’s total, and I’m sure the folks over there at Warner Bros. did.
#6 – No Good Deed; $4.6M weekend

#7 – A Walk Among the Tombstones; $4.2M weekend
