Box office estimates are in for the 2014 Halloween weekend, and the October movie season ends with a whimper.
#1 – Nightcrawler
Let’s be honest, a $10.9M opening weekend that ties and could possible end up dethroned by the second weekend of a crappy horror film is kind of sad. But this also isn’t regular moviegoer material. This is award season material. Meaning the film will have a good run while it lasts and then receive a boost from the awards that Jake Gyllenhaal is likely to bring in. I really would like to know why this went straight to wide release instead of starting out limited and then going wide off of the movie’s buzz like the material seems to beg for.
#2 – Ouija
In terms of horror movie potential, Ouija had an awesome second weekend hold. That awesome then becomes spectacular when you add in the fact that even the Satan-worshippers hated this film. But hey, it was basically the only scary choice for the Halloween weekend. Everyone involved should be ecstatic about the $10.9M weekend bringing the pic to a $34.9M total, because the next time you blink this film should be gone completely.
#3 – Fury
The WWII pic had another okay hold to bring in $9.1M on its third weekend. While one would think that the film’s current total of $60.5M has time to grow, it’s got to be mentioned that the holiday box office starts next weekend as studios will be releasing blockbusters from then almost until the end of the year. So unless there’s a miracle in Fury’s future, this tank is about to run out of gas.

#4 – Gone Girl
The thriller film adapted from a Gillian Flynn novel had another great weekend with an $8.8M haul. If anyone still cares, that brings the movie’s total to $136.6M. Can I stop having to talk about this movie please? All I have to say is TGFI. No, I didn’t flub that up. TGFI stands for “Thank God for Interstellar,” which hits wide release next weekend and will be the new “it” movie for audiences. I’m sure there’s going to be a “careful what you wish for” scenario coming out of this post…
#5 – The Book of Life
It looks like the Halloweekend was able to boost a bit more life into the kiddie flick, as the movie had an $8.3M weekend thanks to a spectacular hold. Even though it’s only got $40.5M in the bank so far, that’s a more impressive number when you consider the fact that animated movies that don’t come from one of the big animation studio players (DreamWorks, Blue Sky, etc.) have a ceiling in terms of box office potential. Still, look for this and the rest of the younger skewing movies to fall off the charts when Big Hero 6 makes its debut next weekend.
