Movie Hopes and Dreams: Who Should Play Young X-Men Characters?

Xmenjimlee

I don’t know about you, but I’ve found that the casting rumors floating around the internets about the new young X-MEN: Apocalypse cast left much to be desired. By that, I mean that every pick I’ve seen has been boring. Whether it’s been the actresses being looked at due to their celebrity statuses, or the boys being looked at for Cyclops who seemingly blend together, the choices are dull and predictable.

I’m not saying that I could think of anyone better.

Nope, I’m definitely saying that.

I’ve already lost about 50% of my excitement for this film due to the news that to bank on Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender’s star statuses, they’re going to be turning the next film into some sort of rom-com romp between Magneto and Mystique (so much stupidity floating around). I lost 40% more when I remembered that Bryan Singer was still directing. So, the remaining 10% of hope I have is dedicated to the chance of seeing James McAvoy be James McAvoy, and the chance that the casting directors will find some interesting and charismatic talent to take on the roles of characters we know so well, but at a different point in their lives.

So, with that being said and my frustrations known, here are my picks for who would be nice to see take on the mantles of Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm.

Character: Jean Grey

My Pick: Sophie Turner

Listen, this character is a badass. Like, an unbelievably skilled and powerful super heroine who should be played by someone who seems like she could grow to be that, and Sophie Turner is so striking it’s not far-fetched to believe she’d nab a superhero part in the near future. We’ve already seen her learn the rules of the game in the HBO series Game of Thrones, so we know she can appear to be the smartest person in the room as well as the one who’s likely going to surprise you.

Character: Jean Grey

My Pick: Jane Levy

From what I’ve seen of Jane Levy, and it hasn’t been much, she’s grabbed by attention with a very charismatic, very sly screen presence. While able to play sweet characters, she’s also not afraid to play it dark (see the Evil Dead remake as an example). She also often has wonderful screen presence with her costars and could easily create a rapport with anyone she’s playing against.

Character: Cyclops

My Pick: Dylan O’Brien

Okay, firstly, he just looks like he could, reasonably, play a younger version of James Marsden. Also, O’Brien works wonderfully in the naturally sardonic nature of his character Stiles on Teen Wolf, which plays into the hands of the Cyclops character. We’ve seen him play action hero in this year’s sleeper hit The Maze Runner, and despite the surprising success of the film, we’re ready for him to be in a bigger franchise.

Character: Cyclops

My Pick: Jeremy Allen White

In all honesty, if I could cast all of the Shameless crew in everything I would, because they’re just that talented, and Jeremy Allen White is one of the best of the strong ensemble. Despite this he has very few films on his roster. Just give him the role and see what he does. With his roughish attitude and bad boy charm, he’d make new fans of the character.

Character: Storm

My Pick: Lupita Nyong’o

We all want this to happen so let’s make it happen. I don’t know how we go about this, but still, it’s worth a try because it just screams perfect casting. Who in recent years has done regal like Nyong’o?

Character: Storm

My Pick: Lyndie Greenwood

This may be my oddest choice on the list but after seeing Sleepy Hollow it just seems right. She looks the part, she can be intense as well as flirty, and she’s got a fantastic physicality and demands attention. Seems perfect for a character like Storm who plays the leader as well as hero. She needs to be able to believably convince us that people would follow her.
