Film News: Lionsgate CEO Wants More ‘Twilight’ films After ‘Breaking Dawn Part 2′

Following the acquisition of Summit Entertainment, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer has stated (unsurprisingly) that he would love to see more Twilight movies after “Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ hits theaters later this year.

While this statement on its own has roused all sorts of angry responses from fans and haters of the series alike, it should be made clear that he was answering a leading question from the LA Times while talking about Lionsgate’s acquisition yesterday.

The question posed to him was whether he sees the Twilight franchise continuing past “Breaking Dawn – Part 2”. His answer was what you would expect any new CEO who has just inherited the rights to this billion dollar franchise:

“It’s hard for me to imagine a movie that does $700 million-plus doesn’t have ongoing value. It’s an amazing franchise that they have done a great job of maintaining with absolutely no deterioration. So the simple answer is ‘Boy I hope so.’”

While Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series does come to an end at Breaking Dawn, I can see Lionsgate quickly putting her short spinoff novella “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” into production, either as a movie or extending it to become a tv series that includes aspects of Meyer’s Twilight world. It is too good of an opportunity not to play with ideas of making more in the Twilight series, considering its phenomenal success in the box office.

We can compare Harry Potter with Twilight as much as we want, but to tell the truth J.K. Rowling hasn’t published too much outside her Harry Potter books, while Stephenie Meyer seems quick about churning out new content. Somehow though, I think I would be very offended if Warner Brothers attempted to make more films about the Potter world without it previously being written by Rowling herself. All of this is just talk and we will just have to wait and see! One thing is for certain though, Lionsgate certainly wouldn’t be making a loss if they did decide to create new Twilight movies – fan disapproval or not.
