Box office estimates are in over the weekend of December 12-14, 2014.
#1- Exodus: Gods and Kings
With these weekend numbers, the intended biblical epic should really change its title to something a little less, well, epic. The Ridley Scott directed film plagued with outrage over its whitewashed cast only managed to take in $24.5M during its opening. On top of middling reviews and controversy over Christian Bale ostracizing some Christian moviegoers from the audience with his comments, the film felt like just another religious film in a year heavy with them. Needless to say, long-term economic prospects do not look good.
#2- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1
Though it is still a huge chunk of cash behind the previous two films, MP1 continues its slow and steady decline with a $13.2M weekend. With $277.4M in the bank, the YA adaption still has an uphill climb to reach that coveted “domestic highest grossing film of the year” title. Even if that milestone isn’t reached, the previous film already claimed that title for the series last year and this is bringing in ridiculous amounts of cash for Lions Gate regardless.
#3- Penguins of Madagascar
With a $7.3M weekend and a $58.8M total the animated film is still yet to justify its creation. Were this any other time of year, the flick would be on course to close with around $80M. But Christmas time is soon. And if this can manage to stay a relevant option for those hordes of kids who are out of school, the story might not be over for this film just yet.

#4- Top Five
Talk about a pleasant surprise. Opening in less than 1,000 theaters, the Chris Rock vehicle managed to bring in $7.2M in its first weekend. Even more of a pleasant surprise is how great I’m hearing this film is. When someone who hasn’t been having the best success at the box-office manages to turn everything around, and bring in a big cast of awesome supporting players in the process, its definitely something to get excited about. With an expansion ahead, things are looking pretty good for this small comedy.
#5- Big Hero 6
The slow success story continues. Still a week or so out from winter break, the Dinsey Animation Studios film of the year brought in $6.1M this weekend. It’s total is now $185.3M meaning its just a week away from passing Wreck it Ralph and setting its sights on Tangled. While there is still no chance it gets anywhere near last years Frozen, this is nothing to be upset about either.
