Box office estimates are in for the weekend of Jan 2-4th, 2015.
#1 – The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies:
Though it’s certainty not a post-Christmas slump, the final Hobbit had a not-so-great fall to bring in $21.9M this weekend. What a $220.7M current gross says from here on out is that the last entry in the Middle-Earth prequel series will most likely surpass the series low of the previous film, but will have to struggle past $303M to be the most successful of all The Hobbits with LotR level success now out of the question.
#2 – Into the Woods:
With a second weekend slip nearly identical to that of Les Mis, the Disney musical didn’t hold as well as some had expected for only $19M this weekend. Still, its $91.2M total has time to grow. Though, now having seen this film, I can understand its lack of break-out status. It felt like the two hour-plus movie had the characters singing for nearly two hours. It was a lot of singing. A. Lot. Of. Singing. And there were some audience members who were turned off by singing to that extent.
#3 – Unbroken:
Running just behind that, the Angelina Jolie directed biographical film grossed $18.3M this weekend for a $87.8M total. Though this was the film that started on top, it’s now tracking inches behind the Disney musical. Overall, both films are doing just fine and only time will tell which of the two Christmas day releases will end up on top.

#4 – The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death:
Though it opened more than $5M behind the original Woman in Black, this horror sequel happened to lack the presence of The Boy Who Lived (aka Daniel Radcliffe, aka Harry Potter) as well, so its $15.1M opening isn’t all that bad. The bad news, though, is that horror films haven’t had the easiest time at the box office recently and something tells me this one might bleed out shockingly fast.
#5 – Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb:
The final film in the Museum trilogy had another spectacular weekend hold to gross $14.4M this weekend and now has a total of $89.7M. Though a total close to that of the previous Museum film, $177M, is out of the question, the Ben Stiller headed flick is going to have a much easier time passing $100M than originally anticipated. And also one impressive multiple as well.
